Adult/High School–This third novel that focuses on Uhtred is filled with plenty of action, betrayal, and bloodshed, along with a healthy dose of religion and superstition, as Saxons, Christians, and Scots battle for the ground that will become Great Britain. Set amid actual historical events and people, the story picks up where The Pale Horseman (HarperCollins, 2006) left off and is told by Uhtred; his tone is straightforward in a manly, congenial way. Going from an honored warrior of King Alfred to a slave and back, he is tested again and again as he fights not only for the king, but also for the woman he wants. The knowledge that his fate is set by the gods is a constant reminder that, although he is a mighty warrior, he is, in the end, only a man subject to their whims. A blood feud has charted his course, and his outlook on life is only to make a good accounting of himself before he takes up his rightful place in the corpse-hall. Although it may be difficult for newcomers to the series to grasp the characters' tangled relationships, historical fiction lovers and those who want a good old-fashioned action tale should enjoy this book.–Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI

Intrigued, Uhtred joins forces with the would-be king, schooling him in the arts of martial defense and politics. Meanwhile, wily King Alfred is lying low in Wessex, but one senses that he is still pulling all the puppet strings. Although expeditiously sold into slavery by his friend, Uhtred returns after several years at sea still determined to reclaim his ancestral castle and avenge the savage deaths of his family. Of course, all plotlines lead to combat, and Cornwell does not disappoint as Uhtred and his beloved Danish foster brother Ragnar engage their sworn enemy, Kjartan the Cruel, in one final, horrible battle. Bernard Cornwell's style is gripping.

Bernard Cornwell's style is gripping. His sentence style is transparent. The long sentences flow easily and move the reader along smoothly. He puts you into the scene graphically, emotionally and logically so that you live it. Just when things start to get predictable, the plot shifts in unexpected ways so that I frequently went "Oh no!" and had to keep reading to see how Utred would get out his new predicament.
Everyone needs to read historical novels from authors who do good research. I was referring to his maps so often that I now know England far better than ever before (which isn't saying much if I have to be honest) and understand the complex forces involved in the formation of England and somewhat the variety of people groups that still exist there. The violence, the treatment of women, the arrogance of political and church leaders was hard, but so much of human history has been horrible and in much of today's world it still is. These novels show that human nature and ways of dealing with each other hasn't really changed much.

Excellent book - I highly recommend it - Cornwell is becoming my favorite historical novel author

I'm on my third series by Cornwell. This is my favorite, which truly surprises me since I'm not really into this era for historical fiction. It's surprising but completely understandable simply because this is some fine writing. The characters are complex and believable as is the plot. The characters and the plot are well thought out and well written so that I experience total immersion in the story. Cornwell has certainly suspended my disbelief. One of the most annoying aspects of serial historical novels is the determined retelling of past events the characters have lived in previous stories. I know you know what I mean. Somehow I guess authors feel the necessity to engage in this type of storytelling. Cornwell has found the correct balance of retelling where it makes sense and is useful to the current story in this series. Cornwell is rapidly becoming my favorite historical novel author. I highly recommend Lords of the North and his work in the Sharpe series, the Grail Quest series and the Saxon tales series. As always, I recommend you start with the first book and read through. This is hours of inexpensive entertainment.

A time woven tale

I have been on a Viking kick since the History channel show came out a few years ago. I found the "Last Kingdom" show on BBC America and liked it equally, maybe even a bit more.
This book let me see what are the future possibilities for the show.
As always the book offers more and varied details, with discrepancies. I spent 3 childhood years in the UK and remember learning about the Danelaw, so hence the source of my curiosity.
Fascinating time period, all history is fiction, yet Cromwell is descriptive, entertaining, and fun.
The three fates await.

As a layman, I found this to be an excellent read and basis to avoid the simple "buy and hold". It would have been nice to have had a more
"balanced" portfolio in my youth during 2000-2001 and 2008. Ignorance was not bliss at that time ;-)
Having no formal education in economics (though some grad level stat classes), I was able to still glean significant and relevant information.

This book is in-depth but the same time very practical. This book has the most practical use of macro in investment management I have ever seen.

A must read for anyone contemplating a career as an asset manager

This book is the perfect primer for anyone truly interested in the interplay between the economy and asset allocation. As a professional the book was a refreshing trip back to the basics to strengthen my grip on the broad picture in a coherent fashion. A great antidote to the constant din of short term oriented noise. McGee's book is also a successful attempt to bridge the gap between the way academic economists and practicing Wall Street economists think.

Within each chapter are general layouts and methods of developing the various gardens, which precede specific, step-by-step instructions. The author also offers practical and affordable variations on more ambitious designs and shows how they can be adapted to the readers home or building. Oguchi, longtime designer of Japanese gardens and author of more than 18 books on the subject in Japanese, offers English speakers both an overview and practical knowledge of this easily recognized but to many Westerners mysterious art form. Oguchi describes the Japanese garden's relation to architecture from the ancient era to the mid–19th century, tracing its evolution from the lavish hills, ponds and waterfalls of early estates to the inward-turning, abbreviated and abstracted gardens of urban townhouses. He calls the guidelines of Japanese garden design naturalness, studied tastefulness, and harmony, tempered by flexibility for site conditions, current needs and desires, and self-expression, and presents essential design devices such as asymmetry, miekakure (hide and reveal). Most of the book gives concrete details on how to design and build a garden for the home or small business, using as examples the author's designs for restaurants, homes and his traditional teahouse. With precise instructions and illustrations for building typical elements such as bamboo fences and stone bridges, the book gives Americans all the information they need to create authentic Japanese gardens. The lack of a glossary may make it hard for readers to retain meanings of the many Japanese terms strewn throughout the text. (Aug.)

About the Author

Motomi Oguchi was born in 1947. Since he began his career as a garden designer, he has created about 400 Japanese gardens for homes, temples, and public buildings including the Schloss Schoenbrunn in Vienna and his current project, the Shizen-An spa/retreat on the north fork of Long Island, NY.

His co-author, Joseph Cali, wrote The New Zen Garden published by Kodansha International.

Misleading title

This is not really a how-to book. The author shows, in detail, how to recreate some gardens that he created for clients. While this is interesting, you really can't create your own Japanese garden using this book.

Not as good as the reviews led me to believe

Although this is a nice book, it is not as good as the reviews led me to believe. The attractive photos focus on primarily a few gardens that the author himself has made. In at least a couple of cases, the gardens were built where cars had been parked. I kept wondering where the cars went. I am sure the owners did not get rid of them.
The book has been praised for telling readers how to build elements of the gardens. This is true for a few fences and such in the featured gardens. However, I am sure other books in my collection have more information about building more things.

After buying and reading many books on design of Japanese gardens and being dissatisfied because of no detailed help, this book was refreshing. This book bridges the gap between concept and digging a hole to plant a tree. Is well worth the cost.
