Save your money for something better

This is a book only 138 pages. From the beginning to end, all he does was to show off his Excel tricks. Virtually nothing for construction or estimating. If you want to know how to do this or that in Excel, why not "google" up some tips? (Online tips are always free)I purchased it, finished the book within a few hours, and came out with nothing. It came with a CD, but the purpose was to promote the author's estimating software, which is based on Excel but asking for $500. This is not cool...This book is not worth $35 I paid for. I heard from a friend that DeWalt Estimating series is adding a new book on spreadsheet estimating. I like their books better. Would look forward to new book and compare. But I really doubt any other book will be worse than this one...

I thought it was very good

After reading, and practicing with this book, I have built a database where I can change prices to reflect the current market, and estimate jobs quickly and efficiently. There is a lot of information on how to set this up in Excel. Now I don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on an estimating program. This book assumes you are familiar with construction, but unfamiliar with microsoft excel. This book will save you time and money in the long run.

All Meat - No Filler A must-have for any Residential Estimator

This is a book we use almost daily - both internally, and with our clients who are professional homebuilders and remodelers. Yes it's only 138 +/- pages -- but every page is jammed with useful information and it's easy to find what you're looking for. There is no wasted space and no fluff. The author teaches you how to build a category-driven "database" and a front-end estimating interface using Excel. Work through the examples front to back and you'll have a great understanding of how to use Excel (or any modern spreadsheet software) to create a line-item cost estimate, while improving your Excel skills in the process.

This is the same basic methodology that was used to develop the commercial Excel-based product "Estimator Pro" which is sold by NAHB (National Association of Homebuilders). Even if you were considering that product, or the Maderasoft Estimator (another Excel-based estimating system developed by the same programmer who worked on Estimator Pro) I'd still recommend working through this book first.

NOTE: The activity of "Construction Estimating" has two components... counting what is on a drawing or other documents (the Quantity Take-Off) , and then calculating the cost of those items (the Cost Estimate). This is NOT "Blueprint Take-Off 101" nor is it a beginners' tutorial on construction assembly methods which is what I think some of the reviewers may have been expecting. It assumes you are a construction professional and know (for example) what components are required in an exterior stud wall or a cast-in-place foundation system. There are other good references in the NAHB bookstore about blueprint take-off and plan reading.

About the Author

Dr. Paul A. Craig, a longtime pilot, flight instructor, aviation educator, and author, designed and conducted the extensive pilot study that uncovered the Killing Zone. Driven by a lifelong concern with the high accident rate among general aviation pilots, Dr. Craig has conducted research projects for universities, the FAA, and NASA that has targeted the problem. Since 2002, he has worked as the principal investigator for NASA projects investigating scenario-based flight training, competency-based flight training, Technically Advanced Aircraft, ADS-B implementation, and teamwork among aviation disciplines. Dr. Craig is an Airline Transport Pilot and Gold Seal Flight Instructor for multiengine, instrument, and seaplane. He has twice been named an FAA District Flight Instructor of the Year. Dr. Craig won the NASA “Turning Goals into Reality” award in 2005 and the Wheatley Award as the nation’s most outstanding aviation educator in 2004. He is a frequent speaker to flight instructors and others on improving flight training and safety. Interesting, but based on wrong statistics

Unfortunately, Craig repeatedly commits a rather serious statistical error in this book. He uses accident frequency counts, rather than accident rates, as the statistical basis for his conclusions about the range of the "killing zone." Frequency counts are interesting, of course, but they don't account for the number of pilots at each range of flight hours (which accounts for most of the effect he claims). Therefore, they say little about the risk that you yourself face as your flight experience increases. My concern is the nature of that zone, and that we use the right methodologies to explore the issue. You'll have to forgive me for being geeky about this. It's just that it's part of what I do for a well-known agency having to do with aviation (which can't be named, because I'm speaking here as a private citizen).
Statistically, rates aren't interchangeable with frequencies. Rates subtract the effect of how many individuals are present in each "bin" of a frequency distribution (in this case, the y-axis, where the x-axis would be flight hours). In fact, it appears that about 70% of the "zone" may be an artifact, and can be explained just by the fact that the frequency distribution of NON-accident pilots looks nearly identical to the distribution of accident pilots. Bottom line: The kind of analysis we use on data like these is very tricky, is all I'm saying.

Valuable Information, Great Presentation

I love the style in which this book is written. It is a perfect blend of conversational and technical.

The author manages to tell compelling stories that serve as wonderful illustrations of the common dangers, but still use enough technical language to ensure that the events are laid out as precisely and exactly as possible.

This book should be required reading for any pilot. We should take the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others, especially when many of these mistakes were paid for in lives.

This book is written for pilots and the reader should have a basic knowledge of the terms associated with flight if they expect to gain anything from the book.

About the Author

Shizuka Kusano's work has been featured many times in women's magazine and she can be seen on two nationwide TV programs, one of which is broadcast on the educational channel NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). She teaches at more than five different places, including the Tokyo American Club. She had been part of at least 30 major exhibitions in the last 5 years, and has had one solo show. Kusano is the author of five books in Japanese; this is her first in English.

Embroidery fan or Kimono lover

Anyone interested in embroidery or kimono will adore this book. The photographs. Can't describe the beauty of them. The centerpiece is a two page spread of sakura. Just because. If you know Japanese culture, you'll understand. If not, you'll still be astonished by the cherry blossom.

The author describes her inspiration, the stories behind her designs, how she studied. Each page of this book makes me swoon.
The complexity of her embroidery, her color choices and design decisions. Museum quality fine art.

I buy few books because I read so many, but once I got this one from the library, I decided I had have my own copy. It's very reasonably priced for an art book. This is a volume you will treasure and pass on to your grandchildren. I have a Japanese grandchild. I can't wait for her to be old enough to look at the pictures with me.

First off: this is NOT a how-to book.

This book is a photo collection of works done by a master of Japanese Embroidery. The photos provide high quality, stunningly clear examples of her works. I find the examples to be a great reference and that they should serve as inspiration.

This is in short a pretty 'art book' full of AMAZING Embroidery. Def something to have for your coffee table or bookself if you enjoy traditional Japanese culture or just art.

The examples of embroidery are beautiful to look at and can be applied to other products. Looking at these examples, one realizes that the teaching is important but the main requirements to accomplish the needlework are patience and focus. I'm not a pro, but I'll certainly have a go at it. This is for anyone who loves needlework of any kind.
