About the Author
Dr. Anthony Parton is a specialist in Russian avant-garde art of the early-20th century. He is author of Mikhail Larionov and the Russian Avant-garde, editor of Women Artists of Russia's New Age and has contributed many scholarly essays on the subject of Russian modernism to exhibition catalogues, journals and reference works. He is lecturer in the History of Art at Durham University.

Does this book contain forgeries?

I was considering this book until I was directed to the Artnews magazine article from the summer 2011. The Russian government and Tretyakov gallery claim that of the 600 illustrations 150 or so are of forgeries. Reading further there is much controversy around this book. In Feb. 2010 Goncharova's work, Espagnole, sold at Christies in London for a price that made her the highest selling woman artist. Since that time there is a proliferation of forgeries. There is another author involved with this question, Denise Bazetoux. What is true? Do not know. It is worth reading the 2011 ARtnews article. Interested in others knowledge or comments. Still seeking good Goncharova's book.

About the Author
Chris Hodges is founding and senior pastor of Church of the Highlands with campuses all across the state of Alabama. Since it began in 2001, Church of the Highlands has grown to average more than 26,000 people attending each weekend. Chris is a founding member of the Association of Related Churches (ARC), which has launched hundreds of churches across the U.S and abroad since 2001. He also founded a coaching network called GROW, which trains and resources pastors to help them break barriers and reach their growth potential. Chris is the founder and president of Highlands College, a ministry training school that trains and launches students into full-time ministry careers. Chris holds an MA from Southwestern Christian University. He and his wife, Tammy, have five children and live in Birmingham, Alabama. He speaks at conferences worldwide and is the author of Fresh Air and Four Cups.

This is a great study on God's core promises in Scripture. However, I wish it had one "introductory" session to give the class more of a foundation for the rest of the teaching. Pastor Chris blends a bit of humor along with the truth, and presents it in a captivating manner.

About the Author

Sunny Harris Rome is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at George Mason University where has served as BSW Director, MSW Director, and Department Chair. Prior to joining the faculty, she worked as a litigator for the U.S. Department of Education and a lobbyist for the National Association of Social Workers. She teaches courses on social policy, legislative advocacy, social work and the law, forensic social work practice, and community change. Her research interests focus on the intersection of social work and law, primarily in the areas of child welfare and immigration. She is a Faculty Fellow with the Cochrane Collaboration College for Policy and is active in promoting social work involvement in political action. Professor Rome earned her MSW from the University of Michigan and her JD from Georgetown University.

The reason this book receives a high rating is not only was she a great player and had an outstanding swing she knew it so well she can explain in her words why it worked so well. Mr. Ben Hogan was quoted as saying Mickey Wright was the BEST golf swing he ever saw. Just looking at the pictures you can clearly see why he proclaimed it so.

It's not complicated, it's a simply golf swing , the book reminds me of the saying " keep it simple stupid". She doesn't tell you how to fix this or that , Mickey shows and tells you how to swing the wright way , just a one piece slow ,low ,wide swing back and a powerful motion forward . I loved the book and after reading I find myself standing taller over the ball and swinging harder with great results , I loved reading about her time on tour , but my main interest was the golf swing and nobody has a smoother swing than Mickey .

Grades 4-7--"Life isn't always fair," the team's sponsor tells 13-year-old Joe "Stosh" Stoshack after an umpire errs in calling him out during the Louisville Little League Championship. To reinforce his message, Flip tells the boy about the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, when gamblers allegedly paid Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven other members of the Chicago White Sox to throw the World Series. They were expelled from baseball for life, but Flip contends that the illiterate Jackson was innocent. What Flip doesn't know is that Stosh can time travel into the past via old baseball cards. He goes back to 1919 to try to save Shoeless Joe and meets him shortly before the fateful payoff is about to be made. The criminals are out to make sure that nothing interferes with their profits and are willing to kill the boy if necessary. Antique photographs, baseball cards, and news clippings add to the authentic representation of the time. Action is intense and exciting, both on and off the baseball field, and there are touches of humor when Stosh mixes up his own era with 1919. The story evokes strong sympathy for Jackson, and an endnote suggests that readers write to the Baseball Hall of Fame in support of his induction. The fourth in a series, this novel is an intriguing melding of sports history and science fiction that should be a hit with middle-school readers.

Gr. 4-7. Gutman's well-received Baseball Card Adventure series features Joe Stoshack, the 13-year-old narrator who can travel back in time by holding a baseball card. When an umpire's bad call results in a loss for Joe's team, he is furious. But when the team's sponsor tells him that "life isn't always fair," and illustrates the story of Shoeless Joe Jackson, the boy decides to head back to 1919 and make things right. Young Stoshack's experiences are certainly varied: he spends the night with Jackson and his wife, unexpectedly walking in on her naked not once but twice. He overhears crooks plotting to fix the World Series before he's imprisoned and nearly shot by them; he meets long-dead relatives and tries to cure one of influenza. The story ends with Joe back home. Although he was unable to fulfill his initial purpose, his trip has changed history in other ways. The book ends with Gutman's impassioned plea for readers to join a campaign to clear Shoeless Joe's reputation. A not-quite-believable, but still highly enjoyable time-travel adventure. Unnecessary Inclusions

I was looking for a book to use in my fifth grade classroom at school as a part of our reading curriculum. This was a recommended book, so I began reading it. At first, I loved the book! It is well written, witty, and right on grade level for my fifth graders. Then I turned the page to read how the main character sees Joe Jackson's wife naked. This happens more than once, and is not going to fit as a read-aloud book with fifth grade boys. Crude words for going to the bathroom and a reference to the main character in just his underwear are other reasons I can not completely recommend this book. It had such potential, but I feel the negative inclusions in the story have ruled it out of my thoughts for using it. Sad.

A Baseball Hit!

Baseball fans here comes a new hit! It's called Babe and Me and it's got baseball, time-travel, and mystery all rolled into one. This novel is about a boy named Joe Stoshack and his Dad. They live in Louisville, Kentucky in the 1990s. This pair are big Babe Ruth fans, and like most other fans, they are DYING to know if he did call his famous home run on October 1, 1932. Unlike others, they have a secret. Joe can travel to any time on a baseball card by holding the card for 30 seconds! So they travel back to the Depression and watch the famous game.
This novel has a moral too. Joe learns tht behind the glory, Babe's life isn't perfect like you'd think it would be. He has troubles like any average person.
So if you like baseball, fantasy, or even history, read Babe and Me. It's a novel most baseball fans won't want to miss.

Call It What You Will

In this third book of the time travel series, young Joe Stoshack touches Babe Ruth's 1932 baseball card, and journeys back to Wrigley Field in 1932. His goal is to see whether Ruth really did "call his shot," that is, point to the outfield stands just prior to hitting a home run there. Joe's angry, divorced, recently laid-off father sees the trip as a money-making opportunity (by betting on know outcomes, accruing 70 years of interest, and obtaining Ruth-autographed baseballs to sell when they return to the present).
This well-written book will appeal to all baseball fans, especially its audience of kids around 7 to 12 years. Gutman obviously loves the game and its lore, and he vividly recreates 1932 Chicago. It's a very good history as well as sports book, as Gutman describes (aided by newspaper clippings and photos) such topics as segregation, the Depression, and the arrival of German Fascism. At times, Gutman is a little too sentimental, especially when describing the eventual (and predictable) family rapprochement, and there's a somewhat simplistic nod to the Holocaust.
The main appeal is its depiction of early baseball and the larger-than-life character of the Babe.
Although Gutman exaggerates some of Ruth's grandiosity (which the author points out in an afterward), most of the book is factual. Gutman's researched his subject with sources such as the Society for American Baseball Research and the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Baseball Center. There's also a terrific section featuring contemporaries' opinions on the called shot, and a 2-page summary of Ruth's batting and pitching stats. These are inspired ideas, that, again, show Gutman's skillful weaving of fiction and fact.
This book offers much more than the usual sports fiction for kids. The family dynamics, the historical references, and the awesome presence of the Babe, Lou Gerhrig and other Hall of Famers are a winning combination.

Callie is at an October keg party in the woods, when she notices that her friend Katherine has gone missing. The kids spread out to look for her and Callie finds her, lying on a path, with a big, bloody fake knife in her. She reaches for the knife and raises it, only to discover, to her horror, that it is real. At that moment, another of the search party stumbles on them, and takes a photo of Callie holding the bloody knife. Now she is the suspect in a grisly murder. Since the day I read Give a Boy a Gun, I've been a Todd Strasser fan. His writing is authentic and scary, sort of like that feeling you get when you are all alone and you think someone is watching you. You feel your hair standing up on your arms and little beads of sweat break out over your upper lip. "Is someone there? Hello?" His new novel, WISH YOU WERE DEAD keeps the chills coming.

From the first chapter, Strasser's YA thriller sets us up for more scares than a Halloween haunted house. We cautiously turn the page ahead to the next chapter, readying ourselves for another shock. He makes sure the evil keep popping out at us, giving us fright after fright.

WISH YOU WERE DEAD features a blend of four narrations: an anonymous teen's blog listing the kids she hates, a first person narrative by a nice girl named Madison from a wealthy community, a bit of omniscient narration, and strange ramblings from a possible psychopathic kidnapper. Strasser is able to pull off having this many different narrators through his talent as a writer and the use of font styles to indicate a change in narration.

The main character, Madison, is losing her close friends, one by one, and is receiving strange emails and notes warning her of each impending disaster. To compound matters, she is attracted to the new guy in school, but is unsure whether he is involved in the disappearances or not. When Madison decides to take matters into her own hands, we cringe, knowing no good can come out of a choice like that. The pace is fast and the end is shocking. As I sat curled up in my chair at 1:00 am, wanting to finish it, I was wishing I had started it earlier in the day...it was so dark outside and only a thin screen separated me from the noise on the porch...

Some language and violence, but nothing over the top for most teen readers. The themes of bullying, tolerance, and friendship are all ones to which students can relate. A perfect read for chill seekers...make plans to spend the wee hours of the night with this one.

Unrealistic

Madison is a high school student, dealing with all of the normal high school stuff. Then her former best friend, Lucy, disappears. Suddenly nothing is normal anymore.

Has Lucy been kidnapped? Or did she run away after fighting with her boyfriend? Has an anonymous blogger, hater of Lucy, somehow caused her disappearance?

Things get even more stressful in town when another popular high school student disappears, and Madison finds herself closely linked to both victims.

There are some parts of this book that are interesting. The high school characters act in believable ways, and their interrelationships made sense and seemed realistic.

The villain of this story, though, was entirely unrealistic. I found the ending of the book to be disappointing and anticlimactic.

Needs more development

A few popular kids in a rich high school disappeared. Is somebody out there set to make the rich and beautiful "pay"? That sound like a very pretty interesting mystery to me. And it was. Then why the 2-stars?

Well, because of the endless chit-chat that was going on. Lucy and Madison are rich and pretty, but while Madison is nice and cares about people Lucy is/does not, that is why an anonymous student blogs that Lucy is making his/her life miserable and wishes her dead. Coincidentally enough, Lucy disappears without a trace.

I wished Strasser had showed why the blogger wanted Lucy dead so I could feel the same way. Because that is the point, no; to make you love or hate the characters so you connect with the story? But that doesn't happen here. I have to take the blogger's word that Lucy is a bee-ach to dislike her.

And then there are the entries of the diary of the person who's done Lucy in. They come out of the blue and just made me like Lucy and feel that what was being done to her was totally wrong. Also this person, who is obviously the killer, comes out of nowhere! Isn't there usually a hint or two for you to take a guess and keep you reading to the end if just to see if you were right?

Wish you were dead is just "the first installment in a new `thrill'-ogy." Really? Who else is Strasser going to kill next? The dumb and ugly?

What I liked: the mystery of the disappearances itself. The blogging; you'll notice how at the beginning the blog had zero comments and eventually it increased. And I also liked the anonymous stalker; he was deep and right down to the point.

What I didn't like: all the blah blah blah. I know a high school is full students but, why mention characters that play no part in the story whatsoever? Why introduce people that you are not going to keep around? And why mention "the lesbian duo" if you are not going to elaborate on that? All that was just background noise that took away from the real point.
