Review for "Classic French Course in English"

I have to admit that I got this book thinking that it is a book on how to learn French! This is a quite pedantic book on 'comparative literature on French language', although quite captivating even for me, not knowing the language. I learnt that although French is a very rich language - the poetry part of the language is comparatively weak. There are discussions on a variety of 'Classic French Authors', the operative word being 'Classic' which means authors from a much older period. The authors are listed in the beginning after a short introduction of the book. The introduction itself is very informative, and I gained a good knowledge of the origin of the language. Among the authors listed, it turned out, that I am familiar with some of them. So I read on with interest. The writing is very scholarly yet understandable and for a student in comparative literature the writing is very helpful and informative. Overall I had a positive experience with the book. Next time I will make sure that the book I am getting is about learning French!!

Introduction to the greatest in French classical literature

I purchased this thinking it was a course in learning how to speak French. My mistake. It's got some decent selections, but wasn't what I was looking for. I may change this review after I finish reading the collection, but thought I'd post my experience as there isn't much on the page to indicate otherwise for the casual browser.

The book gives a summary of some French work in English. I would prefer to have the original texts as well. So if one wants to have some talking pints about French classics this book helps. For learning the real material one should look somewhere else.

A great CAPM prep book

I bought this book to get ready to renew my CAPM under the PMBOK 5th Ed. This book was so much easier to use that the prep book I used five years ago, I wish I'd had it then. I really liked how this book led me through the PMBOK, and had exam questions for each subsection of the PMBOK, not just one big test at the end of each chapter. I went through the book twice and when I was doing 80% or better on tests, I took the PMI exam. All of Aileen's advice, like how to reason through the tough questions, came into play as no two PMI exam tests are alike. I passed on my first attempt, and only needed two hours to do the three hour test. I highly recommend this book. And BTW I viewed the Kindle edition on the Cloud Reader and had no trouble with any of the text or tables.

Worth it for the chapter on taxes alone

I've read many books on day trading. Most cover techniques and psychology for trading in quite good detail, and certainly in more detail than covered here. After all, these "...for Dummies" books are intended to be an overview and cover more breadth than depth.

That being said, I find this to be not just an excellent overview as intended, but a real gem for the chapter covering the tax situation traders must deal with. None of the other books I've read have covered this!

If you're aspiring to be a day trader full-time, you need to know about Form 3115 and the mark-to-market election, filing 1040ES and paying taxes on estimated income four times a year, and how important good record keeping is for trades and deductions. You most certainly need to talk to a good tax expert or CPA to work through this, but at least after reading this book you'll have a general understanding of the process and what topics to run by any potential tax advisor before you hire them.

Not Up to "Dummies" Standard

I'm a raving fan of the Dummies series of books, but this one was a major disappointment. It's filled with generalizations, but totally lacking in "how-to" specifics. A much better book to read instead would be "Swing Trading for Dummies."

This is a very good introduction to Day Trading. The author explains all the key aspects, but also spends a lot of time exploring the psychology and type of person who can be successful at day trading. There are lots of references, and the information is current.

An excellent presentation of this therapeutic model

I ordered this book for reference material for a term paper but found it to be much more than that. The discussions of the trials, tribulations, pitfalls, and benefits of the use of self in therapeutic situations is well worth the read for any counselor or student pursuing a degree. The collection of works by different authors, each with their own unique perspective, brings home the questions of whether one should or can use the 'self' in working with others, as well as the understanding that in any therapeutic relationship the self is already present.

This book is a fairly good text book. It is broken down in a strategic sequence. It is fairly dry reading also, however. This is much more of a text book than a reference or for-pleasure-reading book.

We lived his story

My husband and I spent three years (1965-1968) working in Veraguas Panama as Papal Volunteers for Latin America, a Catholic organization inspired by Pope John X!!! incorporating ideas from the just ending Vatican Council !! which launched many efforts to bring the Church into the modern world and closer to the people. Among other things, Latin Masses were replaced with local languages, justice for the poor was emphasized, and lay participation in the work of the church was encouraged.

We came to Veraguas at the invitation of Bishop Marcos McGrath as part of his Plan for Veraguas, a newly formed diocese in the poorest part of Panama. Hector Gallego,a seminarian from Colombia, was part of our team which consisted of the Vicar, Father Vasques Pinto, several priests from the states, one from Spain, another from South America, a lay brother from Holland, sisters from both Panama and the states, and ourselves.
We loved Hector for his enthusiasm, intelligence, simplicity and joy of life. Our term of service was up in 1968 so we left shortly after he was ordained and sent to Santa Fe to work with the compansinos. It was not long after we returned to the states that we were stunned by the news of his disappearance.

We have just come home from a return visit to Panama, the first since our departure in 1968. It was a joyful time there and we were amazed by the changes that have taken place in 47 years. We met many people we knew from our time living in the little town of San Francisco as well as their children and now grandchildren. We returned to Santa Fe and were in awe of the progress. At the time we were there, the only road to Santa Fe from San Francisco was a dry river bed that my husband traveled with Father Vasques Pinto in a jeep - or sometimes they went in a small plane. I always worried about becoming a widow when he left in the plane. My husband was working with Father to try to figure out how to construct a church from what was left of an apparent previous attempt.

It was a great joy to see the Coop started by Hector functioning so well. We brought back as much coffee from the processing plant as our baggage would hold and are enjoying every cup of it. We met, as a tour guide, one of Father's students who now works for the foundation .Father Hector is indeed revered as a Saint there, and it was so edifying to witness the fruits of his labor.

Our second son was born in Panama and baptized in the historic San Francisco church (baptismal fountain dated 1727) by Father Vazquez Pinto along with seven other Campesino babies. We stopped at the retreat center at San Carlos and found the now Monseignor Vasquez Pinto, at the age of 87 still actively working. A long line of people were waiting for a personal spiritual counseling session. With his sisters help, we were able to break into the line for a short but memorable visit. He will continue working until called by the Lord to join his friend,Hector Gallego.

Although the book is historical fiction, and we did not know everyone in the book, we were able to relive much of the time and history through it. Our memories deemed it quite accurate.We were glad to discover the book prior to leaving for Panama and refresh our memory of one of the greatest experiences of our life.

Great Book!

Like all of Dr. Sirias's books, it is wonderful story about ordinary people who are inspired to do the extraordinary. It is not about physical prowess but force of will that changes people's worlds. It is a story about human rights but on a very personal level. You get to see how quickly lives can change when people join together. All that being said, it is also a riveting story.

Beautiful tale of the life & disappearance of Father Hector Gallego. Masterfully written, the author weaves three stories in one. While the book is a work of fiction, Father Gallego is very real and his lifes work is an inspiration to us all. Alphas don’t have dreams, they have goals

I feel proud that I’m in the 1% of men who are actually trying to improve my life. 99% of guys (Betas) never do anything to improve, says the author, John Winters. That’s a staggering stat. The vast majority of us never, ever, get out of our comfort zones, which is why those 99% aren’t Alphas. One quality all Alpha males possess is that willingness to improve. While a lot of us have a lot of room for improvement, if you have improvement in your life, you will get there. If you don't even try, of course, yo won't. I liked the Principles of Alphas section: Ingenuity, Leadership, Charisma, Discipline and Wisdom. There is hope for those of us who are willing to better ourselves and unlock this potential and undertake the journey towards the Alpha state. If you’re not willing to change, there is probably no reason to read this book. It will just make you feel bad. But if you are willing to redo yourself, this book is a manual on just how to accomplish it.

This is such a brilliant source of info! I had never heard of the term Alpha male prior to purchasing this book but now I have a clear understanding. I have 4 boys all of whom I am raising to be successful, aggressive and dominant young men. This book will provide a perfect guide for my boys to read and follow in order to achieve high goals and be properly molded as strong and commanding individuals in society. So much worth reading!
