About the Author
Michael Hitt is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Texas A&M University and a Distinguished Research Fellow at Texas Christian University. Michael received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. He has coauthored or coedited 26 books and authored or coauthored many journal articles. A recent article listed him as one of the 10 most cited authors in management over a 25-year period. The Times Higher Education 2010 listed him among the top scholars in economics, finance and management based on the number of highly cited articles he has authored. A recent article in the Academy of Management Perspectives lists him as one of the top two management scholars in terms of the combined impact of his work both inside (i.e., citations in scholarly journals) and outside of academia. He has served on the editorial review boards of multiple journals and is a former editor of the Academy of Management Journal and a former coeditor of the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. He received the 1996 Award for Outstanding Academic Contributions to Competitiveness and the 1999 Award for Outstanding Intellectual Contributions to Competitiveness Research from the American Society for Competitiveness. He is a fellow in the Academy of Management and in the Strategic Management Society, a research fellow in the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers and received an honorary doctorate from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He is a former president of both the Academy of Management and of the Strategic Management Society and a member of the Academy of Management's Journals' Hall of Fame. He received awards for the best article published in the Academy of Management Executive (1999), Academy of Management Journal (2000), the Journal of Management (2006), and the Family Business Review (2012).

R. Duane Ireland is a University Distinguished Professor and holder of the Conn Chair in New Ventures Leadership in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. He teaches strategic management courses at all levels. He has more than 200 publications. His research, which focuses on diversification, innovation, corporate entrepreneurship, strategic entrepreneurship, and the informal economy, has been published in an array of journals. He has served as a member of multiple editorial review boards and is a former editor of the Academy of Management Journal. He has been a guest editor for 12 special issues of journals. He is a past president of the Academy of Management. Dr. Ireland is a fellow of the Academy of Management and a fellow of the Strategic Management Society. He is a research fellow in the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers and received an award in 1999 for Outstanding Intellectual Contributions to Competitiveness Research from the American Society for Competitiveness. He received the Falcone Distinguished Entrepreneurship Scholar Award from Syracuse University in 2005, the USASBE Scholar in Corporate Entrepreneurship Award from USASBE in 2004, and the Riata Distinguished Entrepreneurship Scholar award from Oklahoma State University in 2014. He received awards for the best article published in Academy of Management Executive (1999), the Academy of Management Journal (2000), and the Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship (2010). He received an Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Research from Texas A&M University (2012). In 2014, Dr. Ireland was listed as a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher (a listing of the world's most influential researchers), and he was also listed as one of The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds (a listing of the top cited researchers in science around the globe).

Robert E. Hoskisson is the George R. Brown Chair of Strategic Management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Irvine. Dr. Hoskisson's research topics focus on corporate governance, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate and international diversification, and cooperative strategy. He teaches courses in corporate and international strategic management, cooperative strategy, and strategy consulting. He has coauthored 26 books, including recent books on business strategic and competitive advantage. Professor Hoskisson has served on several editorial boards for such publications as the Strategic Management Journal (current Associate Editor), Academy of Management Journal (Consulting Editor), Journal of International Business Studies (Consulting Editor), Journal of Management (Associate Editor) and Organization Science. His research has appeared in over 130 publications, including the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Perspective, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, California Management Review, and the Journal of World Business. He is a fellow of the Academy of Management and a charter member of the Academy of Management Journal's Hall of Fame. He is also a fellow of the Strategic Management Society and has received awards from the American Society for Competitiveness and the William G. Dyer Alumni award from the Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University. He completed three years of service as Representative-at-Large for the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management and currently serves as Past President and is on the Executive Committee of Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society.

Great for renting

Received this when I was in school. Amazon rent is probably the best place to get the books you need. Grant it they do not have all the books you will need but most of them they will. I was even able to find some that my instructors said that I may have an issue finding. Amazon rent saved me a ton of money and I recommend it for any and everyone in school. If you are going to be a little late on your return they can extend your rental for a low fee with out having to buy the book at full cost returning the books are easy as well. This in itself should inspire folks to get out there and get their degree.

A good strategy read

The text is arranged in a very straightforward manner. The content can be a little redundant, but the authors have done well to re-emphasize their points without the monotony of saying it the same way. There were a few typos and regarding their take on the strategy of one international bank, they were not well informed. Out of all of the points, thoughts and content, there was only that. I would recommend the book for those who regard themselves as thought leaders and want to develop their mental capital. Everyone else, keep reading Dilbert.

This is a tissue book for sure.

Haven had a good childhood until it was ripped away in a moment. The last seven years she has endured her existence in a shell of her former self. She is trying to just get by day to day and all the bad stuff she has to live with, hopefully will soon be a thing of the past once she hits eighteen.

Damien Knight has his own secrets, he recognizes something in Haven he has never seen in another person. Damien is the schools bad boy, the guy who sleeps with the girls with zero commitment and that will never change. Damien decides as much as Haven has rebuffed his interest, he is going to find out what is going on and when he does he finds himself even more protective of her. Can two people so lost find a future no one saw coming?

This is a tissue book for sure. I thought it was powerful and I was surprised that the Haven-Damien connection is not instant. Everything is gradual and builds with each turn of the page. Excellent read.

It Started off Great but Ended Flat.

This novel was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. It touched on such a deep topic that made it emotional.

What I like most about Haven's Knight was the writing. From the first sentence, it immediately took hold of my attention and captured me into a world of sadness and pain. I felt so much for Haven as a character.

However as much as it pains me to say this ... after a while to story fell completely flat. The shocking reality and rawness that was the beginning of the novel disappeared leaving something unrealistic and too hard to be believe. After a while even the characters became one dimensional. One thing that started to annoy me was Damien's POV; it was thrown into the story at odd and awkward times which made them pointless. And every time the POV switched you were thrown back moments and even days before the present event taking place in the story which became frustrating. Grants reasons for his hatred for Haven was poorly explained. At one point it was discovered that he blamed Haven for her mothers death but that wasn't a correct way to explain why he repeatedly beat her for seven years prior to the mothers death. I felt it was a story plot that lacked any real thought or development. Also the ending rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't understand how and/or why the author choose to have Grant shoot up the school, again another plot to the story with holes. It just didn't add up. Also the fact that Mark intentionally took another life like he was above the law rubbed me the wrong way. I'm all for justice and evil beings getting what they deserved but to allow these young characters to take a life and make the reader think it's okay, that it's acceptable didn't work for me. It could have been implied but it should have never been explained and made to look like it was justified. But that's just me ...

Overall, this was a good novel. The writing was great, Haven's character was well written and developed. The ended fell weak. I will most likely give the author another chance and read another novel from her.

Knight rises to the rescue

I loved the unconditional love and friendship that Damien and Chris had for Haven. I thought it was unique that Haven only had guy friends. I loved how Chris would make Haven a lunch everyday and talked to her even though she stayed quite and withdrawn. That is a true friend. He never gave up on her.

Complex and heartbreaking

For some reason, this is probably the hardest book for me to review, ever.

For starters: I should probably mention that it's hard for me to be completely unbiased. I am after all a character in this book - or rather there is a minor character in this book named after me (I'm not going to go as far as to say "inspired by me", even though she's sensible and reasonable and what not, ahem), amongst all the other dozen or so fan cameos who made it into this book, so... yeah.

Other than that (i.e. being a total fangirl of this series and of its author and posting and interacting with other fans online), I have no affiliation with either the author or the publisher. I have received no free copies in exchange for this five star review - in fact, I've already purchased three copies myself (Kindle to read + hardback & paperback to adorn my shelves) and, I suspect, will be buying some more.

Now that this is out of the way... I don't want to spoil things too much, so I won't be going into plot detail, but be warned that there will be reactions here - and spoilers to the extent that have been hinted at in the description or other material (blog posts, Twitter posts) that was publicly available before the book was released.

Of course, if you've read this far into this series - and have taken a look at the cover, with that cover art and the "No one is safe" tag line, it probably goes without saying that Things Happen in this book, and that not all of those things are fun, light-hearted and fluffy.

Overall impression: this is, without a doubt, in my opinion, the best Skulduggery Pleasant book written yet. By that I mean the plot, the twists, the writing, the sheer complexity of this eighth - and penultimate - full volume.

Is it my *favourite* book in the series? No. No, it's not. Mostly because of reasons - reasons that have to do with Last Stand of Dead Men leaving me heartbroken and crushed and numb once I was done.

"Children's book", they say. "Humour," they say. ... No. Yes, children can read it (if they're okay with all the bloodshed and the sexual innuendo, which by now isn't always even innuendo but pretty straightforward relationship stuff, or the swearing, which is, while not overwhelming, present and IMHO very much justified when there), and yes, like every other SP book, it contains a lot of humour and howlingly funny moments and scenes and dialogue, but this is neither a children's book or a predominantly humorous book.

This is a book about war, and about betrayal, and about the things people do. The things *good* people do, when there is a need, and the things good people do, when they cannot resist the temptations and the lure of absolute power and freedom and magic any longer. It's a book about how far we - or the characters, anyway - are willing to go, and a book about the breaking points of strong people.

There is torture, and there is death, and there is bloodshed, and there is backstabbing, and there are political machinations, and yes, there is also love (because no matter how one interprets the love between Valkyrie and Skulduggery, whether one reads it as completely platonic or something a bit different, I can't see how one could deny it's there in so many ways, but Val & Skul, central to the book and the series as it is, is not the only relationship touched upon), and there is heartbreak and hurt and sadness.

I would love to talk about characters here, but that would take me straight into spoiler territory. Suffice it to say that Valkyrie's path - the path she has been on since the first book, the first day, but more pronouncedly since the end of Dark Days - has taken another turn, sharper than ever. And I have no idea - no idea at all! - how things will turn out in book nine, the final book. My heart is hoping for a happy ending; my head is saying it's not going to happen.

Skulduggery... Let's be honest, I've been in love with Skulduggery since his first appearance. Since I saw the cover of the first book, probably. But this book, this book made me fall in love with him all over again. He's magnificent when in charge, he's loveable even when jealous, he's sweet and adorable when smug... and truly, I think this was finally his book, one where we see him through the eyes of multiple people, not just Valkyrie.

And oh, how my heart aches for him.

If this is Skulduggery's book, it's also the book of a multitude of secondary characters. We get more points of view than ever before, more chapters from secondary characters' POV, and while I wished deep down that we'd focused more on Skul and Val instead, I do think the multiple points of view enriched the book, emphasized the sheer scope of it (as well as providing some much needed laughs at times, even if Scapegrace and Thrasher have become much more than just comic relief by now).

And then there were the twists and the reveals. One of them I had guessed, sort of - I was about 98% certain of the identity of a particular character, who until this book was only seen pulling strings behind the scenes, mostly by the process of elimination (or in other words, no matter how much I tried to assume otherwise, every hint, every path of reasoning kept leading me back to this one specific person). So when that reveal happened, I wasn't surprised by the who, but I was still shocked about the how.

Another of the Things That Happened... I had not expected. I hadn't expected it to happen in this book, in any case, or in this way. And that one hurt, even more than the first twist, and it's the primary reason why, for the first time in all these years I've been reading this series, I'm not anticipating the next (and final) book with excitement but rather dreading it.

That said, bring it on. I'm scared - terrified, in fact, and right now I'm nowhere near ready yet, emotionally, to face that final chapter in what has become my absolute favourite book series ever - but I trust Derek Landy and most importantly, I trust him to do what is needed, not what the readers might want, no matter how much it might hurt. (That said, I'd be delighted if "what is needed" turns out to be a happy ending, with Skul & Val walking hand in hand into the sunset. Oh yes.)

a big fan but waaay too predictable

I love Derek Landy's books and have honestly been waiting for this book for ages. To the point were when my boyfriend told me there was a 3 D cardboard character of Skulduggery Pleasant i did try to pinch it as bragging rights...honestly who wouldnt? Anyway, it didnt happen. But when this book released raced to the shops and bought it before my friends.

It took me a day to read this piece. The beginning amazing. The middle great and then as I read I noticed it was waaaay, waaaaay tooo predictable. It was as if even the jokes were getting old. I even played this game with my friend were i closed the part i was up to and told my friend what would happen and i was right every time. Yes, there was a few amazing twists that snuck up on you but most of it dissappointed me. And from the ending you can tell whats going to happen in the last book releasing next year.
However the plotline was visible and there was a lot of new and fun characters and veiw points even though it was a little jumpy. There were a few spelling errors and formatting was good.
All in all, this wasnt the best book id seen from derek landy.

Message To Derek Landy:

*points at a character* Don't kill that one! Just get the monster to remove her soul then she'll be back to normal. Kill the other one and oh all the roarhaven people their annoying.

Oh and loved what you did to Scapegrace hehe or Zombie King that made me laugh. Especially asking for Valkyries advice part haha...Dont make the last predictable or at least try not to. Your books are amazing. Thankyou andhope you heed the advice.

Very interesting and insightful approach to the interpersonal communication.

First I would like to say that I enjoyed the read very much. The book talks about a specific formula that one can use to improve communication with one’s teenager. However as the book continues the discussion one finds interesting that this formula can be used to improve communication with any one (toddler, friend, significant other a coworker). After the read, I started paying more attention on how I communicate to my child. And I realized with the suggested improvements to my questions or statements I could improve communication dramatically.

The book is written in an easy to understand language and presents some ideas in a simple stick figure diagrams that I found both amusing and informative.

At first I thought the book was dragging its feet before it presented me with the formula. However, later on I realized that the author was setting the stage, so when the time comes to present the formula I already had the groundwork to understand the concept and how to use it.
Over all I am pleased that I found this book and gave it a try. I recommend the read.

LIFE-SAVER for parents of teens!

“Want Your Teen to Listen?” gives straight-forward techniques that work! I am really paying close attention to the words I use with my 16-year old now. I focus my and his attention to what I would like for him to do rather than what I don't want. Just this morning when my son wanted to sleep in, I said “Sleeping in feels good but this is a choice for being late to school. It’s your choice. Do you want to be on-time or late to school?” Then he jumped up and got ready! I have used a parenting system, “Positive Discipline for Teens,” and using the formula from “Want Your Teen to Listen?” has been a great enhancement, making the parenting system I use much more effective and efficient.

Great book for improving communication skills!

After reading the book “Want Your Teen To Listen?” I realized that it is very useful for communicating not only for teens , but with children of any age, with people of advanced age and even with peers, colleagues, etc. For me as a scientist, I value that the formula is backed by science and has been proven to work. This makes the book even more valuable and meaningful. My youngest daughter is already 30 years old, but I still have difficulties in communicating with her. This book has opened my eyes to new steps that will specifically help me improve my relationship with her. The book is written clearly, it is understandable for people with any level of education. I will look forward to new books by this author. She has a knack for making you think about how to behave with people, how to talk to them, and how to get them to listen to you. So they understand you better. Plus, you eliminate the uncomfortable feelings of alienation in your communication with people close to you. In general, this area of psychology- communication with teenagers, is rather difficult area to study. I respect that the�author has delved deep into this topic and raised it to a level understandable for everyone. With great pleasure, I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve their communication skills.
