Good for Practice

Interesting stories, even if they are a little dark. It makes me want to read it, even though it takes me a lot longer than with an English story. If you are learning Japanese and are having a hard time finding ways to practice, this would be a good choice. The dual languages (Jap on one page and Eng on the other) with the vocab at the bottom was nice to use.

Interesting stories in an easy to read format.

The only bad thing that can be said about this book is that the translations on the right hand page make it almost too easy to cheat and just read things in English. However, if you have a little self discipline, you'll find that there's a lot here to love. The translations are not literal, and aim to maintain the feeling of the sentences in English. I found it fun to compare my translation to that of the author, and enjoyed those "aha!" moments when I realized "But that's not really what it's saying!".

After reading this book it has become clearer than ever that a lot of things get lost/mutated in translation as a means to tailor things to English speaking audiences.

As far as the definitions at the bottom go, it is interesting to note that same word is often defined in different ways based on usage. This is a nice touch as it shows the versatility of those words, that would be hard to grasp if we did not see them used multiple ways.

And to close, I'll say that the story selections were interesting. The repetition of words and phrases in them made them an intelligent choice by Mr. Murray. Because you will see some of the same words often in the same story, you will naturally pick up on them just so you can avoid the annoyance of looking up their definition everytime you come across them.

In summary, this book is a great introduction to Japanese fiction and I've enjoyed my time with it. If you're looking to make the jump into non-educational material, this is a great starting place.

Brilliant! Best thing I've bought for Japanese learning!

This is absolutely brilliant. The stories are interesting and captivating, and never too long to overtly intimidate or tire the reader. You start with really short stories, and as your confidence with reading literary Japanese increases, the stories get longer and more complicated. I have learned and cemented more from reading this novel than by any other method but emersion experiences in Japan. I have a huge collection of modern Japanese literature and, though it was inaccessible before, this novel has made reading, guessing, and understanding Japanese fiction a blast. Note: it won't stop being difficult, even after this. But the satisfaction of reading and comprehending a story in it's original language, and being able to find fault in translations and such, is a really remarkable experience.
Highly recommended, and I hope to see a volume 2! I would buy it in a heartbeat!

Advocating relentless focus on a single objective.

Business books are always an interesting problem. Are they a prop to sell consulting gigs? Are they stretched out one note ideas? Or do they pull off something worthwhile and can they really aid someone find the business success they are seeking?

Another aspect of business books is their audience. Are they written for a specific group or a general public? Are they preaching to an already converted choir to confirm their preconceived notions or are they offering fresh insights and trying to broaden the horizons of readers?

This book is authored by the very successful founder of one of the nation's great realtors, Keller-Williams. Gary Keller is targeting those business folks who want to find single minded success - the kinds of self-sacrificing, dedicated, and single-minded people he wants to hire and who will make themselves (and him) a great deal of money. "The One Thing" is based on the statement by Curly in "City Slickers". Of course, Keller adapts it to his purposes. Keller believes in focus, utter dedication to your one thing, and driving to breakthrough barriers to get to your one big purpose. Some might call it obsession. He is not a big believer work life balance - he actually rejects it and calls it a lie.

The book has a couple of interesting printing twists to it as well. For example, the key ideas are printed in red inserts. But the coolest thing is that he has pre-marked the book for you. In other words, the key ideas are underlined in what looks like pencil - as if a previous reader had done it for you. But the pencil marks are printed in. But they don't look like printed underlines, they look like pencil.

I am positive this book can and will work well for its target audience. When I was a younger man, I am sure I would have taken to it like a duck to water or like fire to gasoline. Everything he says here will work if you apply it.

Just remember that everything has a cost. Every success (and every failure) has a price. Nothing comes for free.

In my own view of life, business success and work are important AS A MEANS TO SOMETHING MORE IN LIFE. In my case, I believe first and foremost in family. I hear any number of executives talk about this as they are on their third marriage and fathering their own grandkids. Remember this kind of talk is cheap. Living real life is hard. What's that old saying? "You pays your money and you takes your chances." There is a lot of benefit that comes from having succeeded and getting the space and time that comes from financial success. But it is space and time to do something meaningful and worthwhile. Business success as an END in life is a poor thing. Money as an end is empty.

All your work will be superseded. All the homes you sell will be sold again (or torn down). Your office (or cubicle) will be filled by others. You will be replaced and forgotten by co-workers. But not by your spouse and kids (and grandkids).

So, work hard. Be focused. Have a furious purpose. But make sure it is in service to something actually worthwhile or at the end of it all you will find yourself looking around for the satisfaction and meaning you thought you would find there and discover that you are standing all alone with a pile of cash in a big home with a shiny car - and not much else.

Buy This Book And Implement Your One Thing It Works!

This helped my small business increase my sales in the last year by around $200k. It might be simple but it helps you to break down what your first "One Thing" should be. It may seem repetitive but there is a method to the way it is written. I purchased it for my managers as well and had them read it so they would understand why were were focusing on The One Thing and the objectives behind it. I not only used this book to increase profit but also helped my managers put a system in place that by doing so would make their employees focus and do the job they were hired to do. This has made our customers much happier which immediately reflected in the quality of the reviews we received. I used this book to break down what was my One Thing was, then what was the One Thing I could do for each of my managers to make their lives better and be more productive, I then asked my managers to do this with each of their employees to make them better. By focusing on just one area to improve that we knew would have the greatest effect on our customers experience we were able to get it done and the book is correct by taking care of the thing that is the most important in the process 10 other things fall into place and get taken care of as well.

After implementing this system and my managers seeing better performance and results from their staff along with making their jobs easier said why did I not think of this it is great?

So once you get your one thing done and in place re-read the book and figure out what the next one thing is and do it. I love this book and will continue to work on its concepts to increase revenue and profit over the years.

As the owner and manager of the company I broke this book down into "One Things" for me and my staff and helped them implement them all while working on my task as well.

I will tell you that I am a list maker and then I have alway been one to tackle the most important thing on the list and go from there and complete the list one item at a time so that may be why this book resonated with me. It really does work if you can commit to identify, focus and then implement what you need to to get that "One Thing" completed.

Very Amusing

I absolutely loved this story. The Muffs are sadly all too real and therefore you can actually see some of what happens within the story possibly happening in real life. They are absolutely oblivious to how they put everyone else out but their feathers get ruffled quite easily. I recommend this book highly and can only say you'll be amused and amazed at the series of bizarre events this family manages to trigger in one night in one Barnes & Noble. Absolute solid 5 stars.

In Spite of Not Caring Enough to Proofread....

I can't say as how sloppiness doesn't irritate me. Especially when I see it coming from a talent who could easily launch himself into a literary career. Let's put it this way. I enjoyed "The Muffs Go to Barnes and Noble" enough that I purchased his other two stories as well. I haven't read those so will not comment. I think the Muffs would be nice if expanded to novel length (just for me) but it's questionable whether a family with the united awareness of a field mouse would be able to sustain a novel. Of course, the Muffs aren't too far from being poster family for a large segment of the American populace--but I'm not pointing fingers.

The good news is that Chris Gerben has got some talent. I've read a lot of these Amazon reviews over the years and I've noticed that the worst reviews come from readers who cannot abide poor proofreading. That's a shame because those are always the reviews everyone reads first. Show me the worst and if it doesn't shock me that much I'll read a good review. For some reason people believe the most cryptic reviews and doubt the ones that sing praise to the heavens. And there were plenty of errors, bad enough that I was stumped a couple of times and had to fill in the words myself. I'm creative, I can do that. Haha. I hope Mr. Gerben is reading this because in spite of his mistakes, the one thing he succeeded at quite well was in putting his story together, and in a rib-splitting way. I was sad to see it finally come to a close.

There's another point I would like to make about writing humorous literature. It's easy to go for the easy laugh. I noticed that there were half a dozen instances when Mr. Gerben could have take the situation to the next level had such and such a thing happened at such and such a moment. It probably would have been funny but there are circumstances involved in going over the top. Mr. Gerben knew when to pull back so that he could retain that feel good ending. Because regardless of what muffs the Muffs really are, we want them to go on living in their happy little sheltered harbor of bad taste.

This short story shows a lot of promise--but it had a great premise. "Idea" is everything in good literature. I hope Mr. Gerben has a lot of good ideas because he apparently has the writing talent.

About the Author
Julia Rothman�has created illustrations and pattern designs for newspapers, magazines, wallpaper, dishware, bedding, books, billboards, political campaigns and subway posters. She has authored and illustrated seven books. Her homage to her hometown, Hello NY: An Illustrated Love Letter to the Five Boroughs, was praised by the New York Times, New York Daily News and on WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show. She lives and works from her studio in Brooklyn, New York.

Leah Goren�is an illustrator and surface pattern designer living in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Parsons School of Design in 2012 with a BFA in Illustration. She has worked for clients including Anthropologie, Ban.do, Chronicle Books, The Land of Nod, Loeffler Randall, Penguin Random House, Vanity Fair, and Vogue.

Rachael Cole�solidified her love for all things inky and hand-drawn while earning an MFA in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts. She loves to draw with sumi ink or watercolor. Along with her job as the art director for�Schwartz & Wade Books, and her involvement with the illustration community, she works on various illustration projects. Rachael lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn with her husband�and son.

Kate Edwards is a fashion and lifestyle photographer. She lives in Brooklyn.

I'm not Julia Rothman and I don't live in a cool Brooklyn loft and I'm not friends with Mary Kate ...

I read the whole book in a day and was incredibly inspired! The trio set up 10 different themed Ladies Drawing Nights to inspire you to start your own. Of course, I'm not Julia Rothman and I don't live in a cool Brooklyn loft and I'm not friends with Mary Kate McDevitt but there's a definite sense that this sort of activity is a great way to infuse creativity into your life, especially for folks who may be creative professionals but don't get a lot of opportunity to make things with their hands anymore.

I particularly liked that they included images of the ladies' finished pieces and a list of the tools that they used as well as the overall projects. The 3D paperboard city project was a particularly clever idea too. The last two ladies nights were the least inspired: one was going out to a bar and the other was a kids night. While they are great ideas they were not as engaging as the projects earlier in the book.

Guidebook for Creating Community Around Art

Ladies Drawing Night will forever be filed in my brain under a category I call "New York Fantasy Life". Similar to how I watch Meg Ryan's You've Got Mail and instantly start daydreaming of owning a children's bookstore in NYC, I can open up this book and fall into an artistic fantasy life. It's escapism at its best. For that alone it would've been worth the purchase, but Ladies Drawing Night does not stop there! I would love to get a group together and do every single theme in the book - especially Pattern Play and Cardboard City! The idea of a Ladies Drawing Night was originally really intimidating for me, but after reading through the ideas and commentary it seems doable and completely enjoyable.

Ideas that Julia and her friends are sharing here are very inspiring and helpful if you want to run your own creative meetings with friends and like-minded people. She describes in details what materials you may use, what you may need for inspiration and she shares some pitfalls that you may have while running such nights.

I have just moved to the city and I am looking for the ways to connect with other creatives here. I am planning to organize something similar very soon! :)

It's this phenomena of lies, falsehoods, and deliberate deceptions that are the focused of "Playing the Lying Game: Detecting and Dealing with Lies and Liars, from Occasional Fibbers to Frequent Fabricators" by Gini Graham Scott. This is a 240-page compendium of information and insight into the adult use of lies from the occasional fibber to the compulsive liar. Forbidden Romance with some heartache

Very touching story between Evie, 18 year old military brat and her former stepdad turn lover baby daddy. Before Evie as to deal with heartbreak when Patton is a POW or presumed dead, Now Evie has college coming up, baby and her heartache to find a way to live life for her and their baby.

I absolutely loved this series. It was very touching. I hope to read more of Veronica's books. She is an amazing author.

Patton is a brave army man. He is willing to sacrifice his life for American freedom. He has a stepdaughter that he cares for when he is called to active duty. When he comes home for two weeks his stepdaughter knows something is up but Patton won't tell her. When she calls for his help he is there and she lays down the "law". She needs to know what is going on. Patton finally gives in and tells her which leads to more than either of them could have expected.

Evie is an 18 year old high school graduate. When her step dad comes home for a break she is confused. They are distant towards each other and it is killing her. She goes out with her boyfriend one night and over harsher dad talking to his friend. She knows that whatever is going on with her dad could get him killed when he leaves again. After calling for him to come rescue her they have a talk that leads to more than she could of ever dreamed of happening.

Will Patton come back to his daughter or will she be left parentless? Read to find out what happens.

Good erotica

It was actually a really good story for erotica. Only glaring mistake is that pregnant women don't go to the pediatrician for an ultrasound. They go to the obstetrician. Other than that it was good.
