Good, but transcribed by someone else...

I was very glad to see that George Winston finally published some of his arrangements, mainly because I have had the benefit of other transcriptions that have been circulating the Internet for at least 10 years. So, I figured I owed Winston the purchase.

I am (just mildly) disappointed in the book, only because Winston say he plays by ear and the music was transcribed by someone else, with Winston reviewing the transcriptions. The Internet transcriptions that were already available for Carol of the Bells and Joy are actually slightly "better" than the ones in the book (especially Joy). I was also hoping for a fingering hint here and there -- there are some difficult parts in Carol of the Bells in which proper finger selection can make the difference between it being playable or not, and the right choice isn't at all obvious. The books only has the notes and chord symbols, which I suppose is fine for the advanced piano player.

Still, if you have never had the benefit of seeing any of this music in print and have wanted to play Winston's music, this is a very nice book. There are some pieces in here I've never seen before that I'm sure I will enjoy.

Disappointing Transcriptions

I was very happy to see this item for sale. I have long been a fan of George Winston and have long wanted to see his music available in print. However, this is a collection of poor transcriptions. In transcriptions of this type, I would expect a wrong note here or there, a missed accidental now and then, and not the most accurate of rhythms. But these transcriptions go well beyond that. "Thanksgiving," for example, I have performed publicly; but an acceptable performance would not have been possible from the printed score alone. I needed to listen to the recording several times while following along with the score and making corrections--not all the corrections, this is somewhat improvisatory music, after all, but the major ones (and there were quite a number of big bloopers needing correction!).

Needless to say, even knowing what I know now, I would still buy this collection to have the outlines of these pieces available since I am a fan of George Winston's music. Hopefully, more of his music becomes available... but more carefully edited!

George Winston's Greatest Hits

I've been a fan of George Winston since his vinyl days, so this collection was a thrill to discover. As others have mentioned, there are some errors here and there. However, if you're just playing along for your own enjoyment, you can easily fix the wrong notes! The transcriptions are definitely better than listening to the CDs and trying to pick out the notes by yourself. A lovely collection, fun and relaxing to play.

The best Winogrand collection, but maybe not $200 better

The work really is great, and does a marvelous job of evoking this era. He could even write--the grant proposal that got him the money for this (included) is perhaps the best, most concise, most haunting proposal I've ever seen.

Very puzzling why some of these images took 40 years to be published. Here's hoping there's some more magic hiding in his immense trove of mostly-unseen work.

But as good as this is, if you're new to Winogrand "The Man in the Crowd" is nearly as good for a couple hundred less.

I recently bought this book, new, on Amazone for $119! Thanks Amazon! I have checked this book out from the library several times and find it one of his best books. Every time I page through it I feel the urge to grab my Leica and do some street photography. If you can only have one of his books this is the one.

Stirring Images of the Seemingly Mundane

It is likely that some of the moments captured here were experienced by many of of us in our normal lives through the sixties. The haunting pictures of roadside motels, through-car window shots to the visually stunning cover make this book a must buy for anyone who appreciates photographs which turn the seemingly mundane into moments of laughter and beauty. Off beat shots combined with striking imagery make this a beautiful collection of photos to own.

About the Author
John C. Kotz is an emeritus State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor at the College at Oneonta. Educated at Washington and Lee University, as well as Cornell University, he held National Institutes of Health postdoctoral appointments at the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology in England and at Indiana University. Professor Kotz has co-authored three textbooks in several editions - INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, and THE CHEMICAL WORLD - along with the INTERACTIVE GENERAL CHEMISTRY CD-ROM. He also has published research on inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry. He was a Fulbright Lecturer and Research Scholar in Portugal in 1979 and a visiting professor there in 1992, as well as a visiting professor at the Institute for Chemical Education (University of Wisconsin, 1991-1992) and at Auckland University in New Zealand (1999). He also was an invited speaker at a meeting of the South African Chemical Society and at the biennial conference for secondary school chemistry teachers in New Zealand. In addition, a recent tenure as a mentor of the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Team, Professor Kotz has received numerous honors, including a State University of New York Chancellor's Award (1979), a National Catalyst Award for Excellence in Teaching (1992), the Estee Lectureship in Chemical Education at the University of South Dakota (1998), the Visiting Scientist Award from the Western Connecticut Section of the American Chemical Society (1999), and the first annual Distinguished Education Award from the Binghamton (New York) Section of the American Chemical Society (2001).

Paul M. Treichel, received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1958 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. After a year of postdoctoral study in London, he assumed a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as department chair from 1986 through 1995 and was awarded a Helfaer Professorship in 1996. He has held visiting faculty positions in South Africa (1975) and in Japan (1995). Retiring after 44 years as a faculty member in 2007, he is currently Emeritus Professor of Chemistry. During his faculty career he taught courses in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and scientific ethics. Professor Treichel's research in organometallic and metal cluster chemistry and in mass spectrometry, aided by 75 graduate and undergraduate students, has led to more than 170 papers in scientific journals. John R. Townsend, Professor of Chemistry at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, completed his B.A. in Chemistry as well as the Approved Program for Teacher Certification in Chemistry at the University of Delaware. After a career teaching high school science and mathematics, he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry at Cornell University, where he also received the DuPont Teaching Award for his work as a teaching assistant. After teaching at Bloomsburg University, he joined the faculty at West Chester University, where he coordinates the chemistry education program for prospective high school teachers and the general chemistry lecture program for science majors. He has been the university supervisor for more than 60 prospective high school chemistry teachers during their student teaching semester. David A. Treichel, Professor of Chemistry at Nebraska Wesleyan University, received a B.A. degree from Carleton College. He earned a M.S. and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Northwestern University. if you are like me and do not like carrying around 1000 page ...

I'm not the only customer who has had issues with the online access aspect of this item and the publisher does an atrocious job of communicating what their packages for this book does and does not contain, so I thought I would lay it out in a review.

So here's the deal:

This textbook has two components: the actual textbook itself and an online component, where your teacher can create quizes and learning modules. In order to have access to the online component, you need to have an access code, which can only be used once. The online part of the textbook also includes the full textbook - you do not need a print copy. You will need internet access to read it though.

If you need online access for your class DO NOT BUY A USED BOOK. You will have to re-pay for an access code. Also, if you are like me and do not like carrying around 1000 page chemistry page books, DO NOT BUY this dual print/online edition - you can read the book online for the $100 fee. I bought this dual edition and then found out in my class that I didn't need the print edition so I tried returning it to amazon and You can also buy that directly from the publisher, instead of through amazon, and save some money. I tried returning my print edition, and amazon conveniently buried in the fine print the fact that they would charge me a $94 "restocking fee".

The best textbook I've ever read.

This is the perfect chemistry textbook, if there ever was one. I took Gen Chem 1 three years ago, so I purchased two other chem books in May and spent the summer reteaching myself all of Chem 1 to prepare for Chem 2 this Fall. This textbook was the one that my current Gen Chem 2 class required.

When I received it (after three months of using the other two), I was amazed at the difference in quality. Although I learned a lot with the first two, this book teaches everything in such a way that it's almost natural to understand chem. I struggled with chem so much three years ago, but now, I would have become a chem major if time + finances allowed it (I already have a degree and I'm now pre-med). Very happy with this textbook and hope that Kotz and co. continue making other books in the Chem series!

In the first eight editions, the computer was recognized as a powerful tool in forecasting.

The computer is even more important now with the availability of powerful

forecasting software and easy access to data via networking capabilities and the

Internet.

A nationwide research study of all AACSB member institutions conducted by

the authors to determine what faculty do about using computers for teaching forecasting

showed that (1) most forecasting faculty (94.2%) attempt to provide

students with hands-on experience in using the computer, and (2) several statistical

packages and specific personal computer forecasting packages were mentioned in

the survey. The packages mentioned most frequently were Minitab, SAS, and

spreadsheets.

The authors have tried several different approaches to help faculty and students

use the computer for forecasting.This edition features the following:

1. Minitab instructions presented at the end of most chapters.

2. Excel instructions presented at the end of most chapters.

3. Three data collections available on the Internet (Minitab, Excel, other programs).

Each collection contains data from the text examples and problems. Each collection

frustrating

I bought this book to do forecasting for work. The authors' names looked familiar, but I thought maybe an obscure article or footnote was the reason. Then, after going through this book, I realized the reason - Wichern is the same guy who wrote the utterly confusing, frustrating, and represensible Multivariate textbook myself and fellow graduate students were subjected to (and promptly ignored in favor of better books on the subject).

This book is a perfect example of why textbooks suck - professors get tenure by publishing and other professors do the evaluation. Learning or effectiveness never comes into the equation. So, as a book for impressing other professors, this book is a huge success. But as a book for actually learning how to do forecasting, it is an utter failure.

With the advent of the internet, there is better information about this subject on-line (like Wikipedia), written for people who do real work. I gave it two stars only because it is a moderately useful reference.

A good text, but frustrating.

The book presents the topic of forecasting in good, methodical way with examples and illustrations from Minitab. It the book also illustrates the procedures on how to work with Minitab.

However, it appears the book may not have been updated for the changes in the Minitab software. As such, trying to replicate the tables and output illustrated in the book is very frustrating. As a student trying to learn the basics of forecasting, it is not possible to tell what errors are mine versus being due to differences in the software.

The supporting student website only contains data sets. An update to the tables and exhibits at the website would be helpful, as well as mentioning the existence of the website more than is currently done in the text.

Other than the frustration caused by the tables and printouts not exactly matching the current Minitab printouts, it is a good, understandable text that would have rated a 5.

Hard book to use

You are not buying this book because you want to.
But be warned, if you are not using Minitab for class, you will have to scour the Internet for Excel tips and tricks to make the lessons work out.
I found the font to be too small for many of the important points (some of the problems absolutely could not be worked without the exact reference to the fine print notes on pages below the examples). Why would you reduce the font size for the examples?
Working through the text was difficult due to inconsistent and poorly referenced greeks (rho means several different things in the book).
If you are an instructor, you should assign individual members of your statistics class the same case study topics throughout the course (stick with the same data set) to increase the richness of the experience. H&W apply the successive statistics topic to the same basic case study data sets from chapter to chapter.

I learned a lot - but the experience could have been better with more Excel, and more consistency, and better editing.

She has also produced editions of Felicia Hemans, Lord Byron, Thomas L. Beddoes, William M. Praed, Thomas Hood, as well as the Longman Cultural Edition of Shelley’s Frankenstein. She received Distinguished Scholar Award from Keats-Shelley Association, and grants and fellowships from American Council of Learned Societies, National Endowment for the Humanities, J. S. Guggenheim Foundation, and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.� She is President (2009-2010) of the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics, and Writers.

Expected to receive the full Volume 2 set (2A, 2B, 2C), but only received one book of the set. The book was in horrible condition as well. The first time I rented on Amazon, I was completely satisfied, but I am extremely disappointed this time around.
