About the Author
ELAINE R. S. HODGES worked as a scientific illustrator in the Department of Entomology at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. After entering the field of scientific illustration at the Smithsonian in 1965, she helped found the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, serving as its first newsletter editor and later as vice president and president. She has also lectured, taught, and written extensively in the field.

The definitive reference for scientific illustration

Since its first edition this book has been by far the best single resource available for anyone with a serious interest in scientific, medical, biological, nature, botanical, or wildlife illustration.
Don't be daunted by the price - this book is worth far more than the next 10 competing books combined. I've been a professional medical and scientific illustrator for 35 years, and I own hundreds of books on the subject, but I think this single volume should be the foundation of any reference library on visual communication in the biomedical sciences.

The best one out there

I have little to add to the other reviews except to maybe say that I've tried to collect whatever published material exists on scientific illustration over the past 40 years, and this is the only one to buy. Anything else is now superfluous.

If you like the Shopaholic series, you'll love the Little Lady

I really really like British books. I've read all the charming books by Miss Read, and all the books by Sophie Kinsella. I searched for a couple of months for some new chic-lit to read and tried a few that fell short of the expectations. Then I somehow came across Hester Browne. This book was so incredibly enjoyable. It was like reading the Shopaholic books but a tad better. And for me the most enjoyable part is that it was clean. It made for really enjoyable light reading.

Liked this book a lot!

I was looking for light reading and this fit the bill perfectly. The story takes place in England in modern times, and is about a young woman who gets let go from her job and starts a business called "The Little Lady Agency". She has a male best friend and housemate and another female friend from her past job. IN her business she accompanies single men to parties and special occasions that they are not comfortable attending single. She also helps men polish their manners and shop for clothing. Her father and her family put her down, except for her grandmother who is very supportive. I liked the fact that there was no foul language and no graphic sex. It is a book that anyone can read from 15 to 95.

Melissa has always been made to feel like a disappointment to her dominating Member of parliament father. No matter what she did, or said he put her down. When she loses her job due to a takeover, she goes to a former teacher who she has been told is running her own business. It turns out to be an escort service, when one of the clients expects much more than a dinner date she punched him and fled the restaurant.
Always being a good organizer, she decided to open an agency to help single men organize their wardrobes and lives.
She along with her alter ego, Honey, do just that....

Decades before "The Body" became an object of safe academic discourse, Schneeman was putting hers on the line, creating a series of films, actions and performances perhaps most notably the majestically Dionysian Meat Joy of 1964 that have become touchstones not only in the history of performance art but also in the development of feminist aesthetics. Schneemann's ecstatic and shocking oeuvre addresses sensational aspects of both the erotic and the political. Both innovative and provocative, her paintings, drawings, experimental films, and collages appeal to an underground audience. She is perhaps best known for Fuses (1960), her key contribution to avant-garde cinema, and traces of her performance piece "Meat Joy" (1964) appear in the works of Annie Sprinkle, Penny Arcade, Karen Finley, and Madonna. Feminism is fully alive and vibrant in Carolee Schneemann

This is a wonderful career survey of this brave artist. Her experience as a feminist artist painter sculptor film maker performer dancer thinker is very inspirational. Carolees relationship to her sexual body and the power of transformation throught the body is so very human healing strong and deeply intelligent. The power of feminist art to change art history and change the world is seen through her performances and paintings. For me the work in this book demands that I remember the struggle women artits had and still have- its only been 30 - 40 years of feminist body art! Let us never forget the struggles of these great artists who are women....This is a wonderful book!

An Essential Source on Carolee Schneemann

Yet another vastly under-documented and under-appreciated female artist. Carole Schneemann was one of the architects of the Fluxus/Happening moments in Postwar contemporary art, fluidly moving between film, performance, painting, and immersive installation work. I utilized this book as primary source material during an analysis of her work 'Meat Joy' (1964) during my graduate studies. Schneemann is, gratefully, still active and still archiving her body of work, and I gather that this text is an essential element to it.

Great introduction to the English Wheel

I'm the kind of guy who sees a tool, knows he's interested in using it and wants to start using it right away in order to learn how to apply it best. That's not necessarily something you do with the English Wheel. I seem to have a vague recollection from childhood of being introduced to this sort of machine, though I can't recall how or where, and initially thinking how easy it was to operate, what a simple thing it was. The person showing me told me to take it slowly, showed how the simple pressure of the wheel against the anvil caused the sheet metal to gradually bend. It seemed so easy I immediately got careless and did the natural thing... I failed to run across the proper length of the metal and ended up with the wrong degree of curvature. The guy showing me said it was okay, told me it was possible to correct it and how, but I just seemed to lose focus as I tried to adjust, and then I made the big mistake... pulled the panel out without releasing the pressure. There was a loud clack of the wheel against the anvil, and the lesson ended immediately. I don't think I ever saw an English Wheel again. Then I requested a review copy of this book since I've been looking to brush up on my understanding of all things automotive, and that old memory stirred in my mind, creating a strange fascination with the notion of auto body restoration and this tool in particular.

The great thing about this book is that it explains things well. Despite my vague recollection of failing dismally with it in my first encounter, the wheel still doesn't seem to me like a complicated machine. In fact, it plainly isn't. But therein lies the difficulty, because the simplicity of it makes the patience and skill of the user all the more important. And to be honest, I struggle with the patience required for something like this. It's a craftsman's tool, and the dictates of modern life require that craftsmen be both accurate and work quickly in order to succeed. The skill and experience it must take to produce panels both quickly and to the precise requirements with this tool must be enormous, but this book prepares you well for learning. I like that it explains not only the basic functions of the wheel, techniques, how and why to be cautious, and the various wheels available on the market, but a handful of other shop tools that may be useful in conjunction with it. I even began to think of other uses for the wheel... I suppose I should have been aware of its use for crafting panels for aviation but I wasn't. And now that I think of it, I suppose it would also be possible to perhaps find some work potentially crafting medieval replica armor for Renaissance Fest enthusiasts, or some such thing. I guess the sky's the limit, or at least your imagination is, if you can think of a use for a shaped and planished sheet metal panel, you can apply the wheel to it. It could even be useful for medium- to large-scale art sculpture, though I don't know that most folks who are looking to learn its use would generally lean in that direction. All in all, I highly recommend this book as an introductory volume. At the very least, it's capable of inspiring and educating, and the abundant illustrations really help in understanding the process.

lots of info, starting with the basics

Mr. Longyard did well with this book, starting with the most basics and working you toward visual lessons by some that are masters in the field. I particularly liked the starting lesson, put a curve in a piece of metal and then make it flat again...

This is a very good book dedicated to the English wheel

This is a very good book dedicated to the English wheel, which usually gets a small section in most metal shaping books. While I have seen some of the material before in other books or videos, there is definitely a new twist on it here and it's the first time I've seen all this information gathered in one place. This is very well illustrated with color photos that clearly illustrate what the author is talking about in the text. I really liked that there were several chapters that followed expert metalworkers step-by-step as they worked on part of a larger project. This shows how one might apply some of the basic techniques shown in the book to an actual project. I am patiently waiting for Amazon to get Mr. Longyard's next book in stock.

The Cruel Captain Gentry tries to murder Tim and his boyfriend Joe. He has bullied these two inmates for a long time, but the warden intervenes and sends Gentry to work at another prison. The warden, however, is a cruel woman herself, and she decides to separate Joe and Tim indefinitely, taking away the only spark of beauty in Tim’s dismal life.

So day after day, Tim spends his time in the grueling slave labor of the yard or working at a new slave labor assignment, known as the wheel, where the guards force the inmates to endure the harshest, most exhausting toil imaginable.

Tim, however, has a plan to see his beloved again – as well as many hot bondage escapades that will leave him wanting more and more from his boyfriend once the two are reunited. And he soon moves into action. He makes plans to spend as much time with Joe as possible. And for a while all is well, but then something happens that no one expects – and even that event will further complicate the bondage and sexual dynamics between Tim and his partner.

Meet Will – An Attractive, Muscular Prisoner Who Stands in the Way

When a court sentences Will to life at the same prison, Tim soon finds Joe’s attention quickly goes to this attractive, muscular prisoner. Tim thinks Joe is interested in Will because of his sexiness, his cockiness, the beauty of his youth.

What Tim does not understand, however, is that Joe’s fascination with this new young prisoner goes far beyond a simple attraction. Tim does not yet know that Joe and Will have a dark and painful history from which they will both need to heal if Tim’s relationship with Joe is to survive.

The Sadistic Games

Captain Gentry’s replacement, who simply calls himself the Sergeant, soon finds a cruel way to earn some additional cash for himself. He brings wealthy young men to the prison and forces the best looking of the prisoners to engage in erotic MMA-style fighting in front of them – not to mention bondage and flogging to tease and torment even the strongest of prisoners.

As an erotic punishment with a twist, the sergeant allows the winner to enjoy all kinds of naughty play with the loser for the wealthy patrons’ entertainment. At first, the Sergeant finds this new venture profitable. But then the complex dynamic of Joe’s, Will’s, and Tim’s relationships stand in the way of his potential fortune.

Somebody finally did it - this is great!

Whether you're a small-town Boy Scout Troop, a big-city symphony, or a World Cup team, you need this book. It's really "hands on." The checklists, forms, and other how-to's take a complicated procedure and make it a no-brainer. It explains the theories, but focuses on how to to get organized internally for sponsorship-seeking, how to pinpoint exactly what YOU need for YOUR specific organization or event - and exactly who to seek sponsorship from, and how. Even if you're a pro in this field, trust me, it'll put you on top of your game and save you tons of time. This is THE reference book that's going to stay on my desk from now on. The sample contracts alone are easily worth ten, twenty, fifty times the price of admission!

A must for any non-profit considering sponsorships.

I wish I had read this book years ago. Ms. Grey starts out with a simple truth that unfortunatley the majority of Development professional do not know, which is in seeking sponsorship dollars you are offering the company a product and not seeking a donation. She also stresses the need for each sponsorship proposal to be expressly designed for the individual company unlike the traditional "boiler plate corporate proposal". The non-profit needs to show the monetary value of what they are offering the company. Since reading Ms. Grey's book we have finally developed a real sponsorship program that is bringing in the funds that we need.

Fantastic resource

What most impresses me about this book is the relevant information provided right from the beginning. Within a matter of pages I found valuable tools to apply in my everyday activities, and that trend continued throughout. Now I keep the book at arms reach as a reference guide. If all sponsorship seekers were to embrace the principles outlined in the book, our efforts would become more successful, while instilling a higher level of professionalism in what we do.
