About the Author
Thomas G. Robertazzi is an associate professor of electrical engineering at Suny at Stony Brook. In recent years, he has taught telecommunications and data networking courses at Suny at Stony Brook, The Cooper Union, and in industry. Since 1993 Professor Robertazzi has also been faculty director of the Stony Brook Interdisciplinary Program in Science and Engineering. Professor Robertazzi's research interests lie in the performance evaluation of computer and communication systems. He has published extensively in the areas of parallel processor scheduling, ATM switching, Queueing networks, Petri networks, and multihop radio networks. In the area of performance evaluation, he has written one book, coauthored a second, and edited a third. Professor Robertazzi has served as an editor of books for the IEEE Communications Society and as an associate editor of the journal, Wireless Networks.

Still great, but I preferred the 14th edition

As a teacher for direct-entry midwives in the U.S., I have used Myles' Textbooks for years. I have recently finished reading this edition which is very similar to the 14th edition. The editors are the same and most of the material is the same.

The book still has a very welcome emphasis on "Evidenced Based Practice", which was introduced with the 14th edition. It is still a wonderfully comprehensive textbook.

The part I especially don't like in this edition is the drift toward the medical model of childbirth presented in the chapter on prolonged pregnancy and disorders of uterine action. Putting time limits on labor may be necessary for meeting new protocols in Britian, but seeing this trend reminds one of the reasons many in the U.S. opt for home birth instead of hospital birth. It just saddens me to see this change.

In the 14th edition there was a chapter on "Family Planning" and in the 15th edition the chapter has changed to "Contraception and Sexual Health". The tone of the chapter has changed to reflect the title. The author seems to bemoan the fact that few women in the U.K. use the intrauterine device, while stating that it is not so unpopular elsewhere, as in China, where 60 million women use them. In China women are FORCED to use interuterine devices!

The chapter "Woman-centred, midwife friendly care: principles, patterns and culture of practice" seems to have changed more to emphasize the midwife friendly part. There was a gem in the 14th edition that didn't make it to the 15th:

"The aims of midwifery are far wider than physical health of mother and baby. They include the following:

* to help the mother and her family make the transition to parenthood in the best way possible; that is, to emerge from childbirth physically and emotionally intact, with the relationships within the family, particularly the attachment between the mother and baby and parents, as strong as possible, and to have the confidence, knowledge and commitment to care for her child until adulthood.

* to support and protect physiological processes and healthy outcomes

* to provide comfort and alleviate the distressing symptoms of pregnancy, labour and birth and the postpartum period."

However, there are still some gems in this revised chapter such as: "When practicing in less than ideal situations it is important to do the best you can, while recognizing that there are some factors out of your control and accepting that your contribution is limited."

All in all Myles is still a great textbook and I'm still using it to train direct entry midwives in the States.

This book should be used in the US and not Varney's

This is the best midwife book ever. It far surpasses the USA textbook "Varney's Midwifery" which is a cumbersome monster. This book is easier to read, easier to understand and better organized for information than Varneys. Plus, it is cheaper and it is available on Kindle!

Jaffrey (author of the James Beard Award-winning Madhur Jaffrey's Taste of the Far East) offers an Asian-centered complement to Deborah Madison's European-focused Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. True to Jaffrey's title, the recipes here do hail from all over the world, but an Indian slant can be detected: a chapter on dried legumes contains Black-Eyed Pea Fritters from Nigeria, Boiled Peanuts Indonesian Style, and variations on Chickpea Flour Pancakes from India; a section on grains includes, among other things, the quickly made flatbreads of India, like Punjabi Village-Style Flat Whole Wheat Flaky Breads. Sometimes Jaffrey adopts vegetarian ingredients to make nonmeat versions of familiar dishes, such as a Mock Lamb Curry with seitan (wheat gluten), but more often she simply delves into the meatless tradition of a specific country and pulls up a signature dish (Savory Greek Pumpkin Pie). A chapter on dairy gives instructions for making yogurt, the Indian cheese paneer, mascarpone and other preparations, then describes a variety of ways these bases can be used (Yogurt with Green Mango or Homemade Indian Cheese Cooked in the Style of Scrambled Eggs). Obviously a labor of love, Jaffrey's masterwork is breathtaking in scope, with a dazzling array of recipes from all over the world. Grouped mostly into broad categories by main ingredient (beans, grain, vegetables, etc.), they are as likely to come from a Palestinian restaurant in Toronto, the nuns at the Ormylia Monastery in Macedonia, or a home cook in Mexico as from Jaffrey's own Indian background or her experience as a cooking teacher. There is a separate chapter on Soups, Salads, and Drinks and a short but especially good one on Sauces and Other Flavorings. Jaffrey's recipes are always delicious, and her culinary explorations and insights make for delightful reading. A good complement to Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone (LJ 9/15/97) and certainly not limited in appeal to vegetarians, this is an essential purchase.

Unique, amazing recipes...but increase the spices (except the salt)!

I've used this book for years now, and made many, many delicious recipes - the tomato sambal and cilantro-mint chutney, especially, are favorites. This vegetarian compendium is a mainstay in my kitchen, because of a wealth of vegetarian recipes that don't rely on unhealthy dairy products and eggs, like the great majority of American vegetarian cookbooks do. Many of these recipes will be very spicy, and in fact I often use less chillies or chili powder than called for, but I always heap the tablespoons and teaspoons of spices called for - if I don't, some of the recipes end up a bit too bland for my tastes. Also, on most recipes I decrease the amount of oil and salt called for by 1/3 - 1/2; I suspect that Jaffrey has developed a stronger taste for salts and oils that is all-too common in the restaurant and cooking industries, although really not necessary to make a delicious meal. Try anything and everything in this book, and don't be shy of adding more than the recommended spice amounts!

Great book for newbies to the kitchen

This book is wonderful because it has a great variety of recipes for both the inexperienced cook(such as myself) and the kitchen maestro. There are more Indian recipes, which is not a bad thing, but I would have liked to have seen more recipes from southeast and east Asia. The book is organized by the main ingredient in the dish. I particularly love the descriptions of the ingredients at the start of each section as it includes tips on preparations. I have made about 20 dishes from this book and I am very pleased thus far. My husband who is not vegetarian has been mostly pleased with the outcomes as well. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Mia and her twin brother have had a hard life growing up. Their sick mom only got better when their grandfather showed up and made her, but when he passes away, it gets bad again. Mia is meek and silent, trying to appease everyone without really doing anything. Jamie, on the other hand, is growing more and more angry and wants his mom to sit up and take notice. He's mad that Mia doesn't understand and wants to show her that she can't always rely on him...after all, what if one day he isn't there anymore?

That's why when news hits that a gunman is in the school, Mia doesn't leave like the rest of her class. She starts to wondering: is that what Jamie was planning? Is this his way to show their mom that she needs to get better?

I love to read books that deal with school shootings because they are all different in how they approach the topic. This is the main reason why I wanted to read BANG, BANG, YOU'RE DEAD! The book is told in a back-and-forth pattern for most of the novel, with the present chapters showing Mia going through the school looking for the shooter who may or may not be her brother, Jamie. As for the other chapters, they are Mia's recollections of times that Jamie showed his anger and destructive behavior...which, all added up, give a lot of support to the idea that it really might be Jamie with the gun.

I really enjoyed the chapters that showed the past, because it allowed us a look into the things we weren't privy to when first starting the book. It gives us all an idea of who Mia and Jamie are and why they would want to cause a scene. It all basically leads to their mother, who is mentally ill but won't get the help she needs. Instead, she sways between depressing can't-get-out-of-bed days and manic let's-shop-for-things-we-can't-afford days.

This is a really fast book and I definitely enjoyed reading it. I should warn that some of the present chapters get a bit tedious, as you really just want Mia to figure out who the shooter is and what's happening or will happen after this.
Once the moment arrives, though, it's all worth it.

Believe me, this is one book that is sure to be a hit with a lot of people because it's not easy to figure out. You think you know what's going on, but in the end, do you really understand?
