An excellent presentation of this therapeutic model

I ordered this book for reference material for a term paper but found it to be much more than that. The discussions of the trials, tribulations, pitfalls, and benefits of the use of self in therapeutic situations is well worth the read for any counselor or student pursuing a degree. The collection of works by different authors, each with their own unique perspective, brings home the questions of whether one should or can use the 'self' in working with others, as well as the understanding that in any therapeutic relationship the self is already present.

The Use of Self in Therapy

This book is a fairly good text book. It is broken down in a strategic sequence. It is fairly dry reading also, however. This is much more of a text book than a reference or for-pleasure-reading book.

We lived his story

My husband and I spent three years (1965-1968) working in Veraguas Panama as Papal Volunteers for Latin America, a Catholic organization inspired by Pope John X!!! incorporating ideas from the just ending Vatican Council !! which launched many efforts to bring the Church into the modern world and closer to the people. Among other things, Latin Masses were replaced with local languages, justice for the poor was emphasized, and lay participation in the work of the church was encouraged.

We came to Veraguas at the invitation of Bishop Marcos McGrath as part of his Plan for Veraguas, a newly formed diocese in the poorest part of Panama. Hector Gallego,a seminarian from Colombia, was part of our team which consisted of the Vicar, Father Vasques Pinto, several priests from the states, one from Spain, another from South America, a lay brother from Holland, sisters from both Panama and the states, and ourselves.
We loved Hector for his enthusiasm, intelligence, simplicity and joy of life. Our term of service was up in 1968 so we left shortly after he was ordained and sent to Santa Fe to work with the compansinos. It was not long after we returned to the states that we were stunned by the news of his disappearance.

We have just come home from a return visit to Panama, the first since our departure in 1968. It was a joyful time there and we were amazed by the changes that have taken place in 47 years. We met many people we knew from our time living in the little town of San Francisco as well as their children and now grandchildren. We returned to Santa Fe and were in awe of the progress. At the time we were there, the only road to Santa Fe from San Francisco was a dry river bed that my husband traveled with Father Vasques Pinto in a jeep - or sometimes they went in a small plane. I always worried about becoming a widow when he left in the plane. My husband was working with Father to try to figure out how to construct a church from what was left of an apparent previous attempt.

It was a great joy to see the Coop started by Hector functioning so well. We brought back as much coffee from the processing plant as our baggage would hold and are enjoying every cup of it. We met, as a tour guide, one of Father's students who now works for the foundation .Father Hector is indeed revered as a Saint there, and it was so edifying to witness the fruits of his labor.

Our second son was born in Panama and baptized in the historic San Francisco church (baptismal fountain dated 1727) by Father Vazquez Pinto along with seven other Campesino babies. We stopped at the retreat center at San Carlos and found the now Monseignor Vasquez Pinto, at the age of 87 still actively working. A long line of people were waiting for a personal spiritual counseling session. With his sisters help, we were able to break into the line for a short but memorable visit. He will continue working until called by the Lord to join his friend,Hector Gallego.

Although the book is historical fiction, and we did not know everyone in the book, we were able to relive much of the time and history through it. Our memories deemed it quite accurate.We were glad to discover the book prior to leaving for Panama and refresh our memory of one of the greatest experiences of our life.

Great Book!

Like all of Dr. Sirias's books, it is wonderful story about ordinary people who are inspired to do the extraordinary. It is not about physical prowess but force of will that changes people's worlds. It is a story about human rights but on a very personal level. You get to see how quickly lives can change when people join together. All that being said, it is also a riveting story.

A tale that inspires your heart, mind & your appetite!

Beautiful tale of the life & disappearance of Father Hector Gallego. Masterfully written, the author weaves three stories in one. While the book is a work of fiction, Father Gallego is very real and his lifes work is an inspiration to us all. The book also serves as a tribute to all Catholic priests who lost their lives in the pursuit of building a more just and loving society. Looking forward to reading more books by Dr. Silvio Sirias. Bien Hecho Maestro!

Alphas don’t have dreams, they have goals

I feel proud that I’m in the 1% of men who are actually trying to improve my life. 99% of guys (Betas) never do anything to improve, says the author, John Winters. That’s a staggering stat. The vast majority of us never, ever, get out of our comfort zones, which is why those 99% aren’t Alphas. One quality all Alpha males possess is that willingness to improve. While a lot of us have a lot of room for improvement, if you have improvement in your life, you will get there. If you don't even try, of course, yo won't. I liked the Principles of Alphas section: Ingenuity, Leadership, Charisma, Discipline and Wisdom. There is hope for those of us who are willing to better ourselves and unlock this potential and undertake the journey towards the Alpha state. If you’re not willing to change, there is probably no reason to read this book. It will just make you feel bad. But if you are willing to redo yourself, this book is a manual on just how to accomplish it.

This is such a brilliant source of info! I had never heard of the term Alpha male prior to purchasing this book but now I have a clear understanding. I have 4 boys all of whom I am raising to be successful, aggressive and dominant young men. This book will provide a perfect guide for my boys to read and follow in order to achieve high goals and be properly molded as strong and commanding individuals in society. So much worth reading!

Outstanding collection and translation

This book collects nearly two dozen classical writings on the use of sexual energy in achieving health and long life. It's a distinctly non-Western tradition, but presents a unified, interlocking set of ideas.

The largest part of this lore corresponds to Western alchemy. It uses many of the same metaphors, such as mercury, lead, and the crucible, and much of the same elliptical language. In a few places, the metaphors or code-words are so obscure that translators disagree wildly on their meanings, and even on whether the meanings can be reconstructed correctly. Other parts of the writings draw on mystical Taoism, Buddhism, and the same vital energies that explain acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Not surprisingly, much of the tradition is aimed at male readers, with relatively little concern for the women. Despite the over-all male orientation, the last few selections do address women, with needs that sometimes match and sometimes differ from the men's. Even the men's writings address the importance of the woman's excitement, though, and describe the outwardly visible signs of its many stages.

However it is phrased or whoever it is addressed to, this set of practices is based on summoning and channeling sexual energy. Many of the authors use the "paired way" of coition to raise that power. Others use solo exercises in self-stimulation for the same purpose. This seems especially common in the women's texts, possibly because placing her needs before the man's would have been culturally unacceptable. The emphasis is on yogic self-discipline rather than exotic poses. Still, one author does offer a list of couplings with poetic names such Mandarin Ducks United (a pose I enjoy very much, because of range of additional caresses it makes possible). I recommend this book very highly to students of Asian thought and to anyone else who wants to see different perspectives on the practice and power of human sexuality.

Excellent translations on sexual alchemy.

This is a compendium of translations of over 20 classic Chinese texts on Taoist esoteric sexual practice. For those with this particular interest, I highly recommend it. There's no other book like it.
This is not a `new-age relationships' book, nor a `light-reading sex-tips' book; it's a scholarly and faithful set of translations of Taoist texts originating from the second century B.C. through the early 1700's.
These might be rather heady for the beginner, but if you've studied alchemical Taoism (especially the sexual aspect) from more modern sources - and would like to peruse some of the classics (from the 1000's of years that the Chinese have been studying this stuff), then this is THE book. It's extremely well written; the introduction alone is worth the price of the book.

About the Author
Barbara Cooper, MPS, ATR-BC, LMHC, is a registered, board-certified art therapist with twenty-three years of experience treating children and adults in school, hospital, and private practice settings. Her specialty is helping parents develop their own style of effective parenting. With Widdows, she is codirector of SuperKids, a social skills program in Connecticut. Cooper received her master's degree in art therapy from the Pratt Institute in New York, where she is now an associate professor.

Nancy Widdows, MS, ATR-BC, LPC, is a licensed professional counselor and registered, board-certified art therapist with thirteen years' experience treating children in school, hospital, and private practice settings. Widdows' specialty is using art therapy to create concrete visual tools to help kids understand the social environment. Cooper and Widdows codirect SuperKids, a unique program that focuses exclusively on social skills development, in Ridgefield, Norwalk, and Orange, Connecticut.

Wonderful resource for teens facing social distress!

I bought this book (as well as the Anxiety Workbook for Teens) to utilize with a teen girls support group I am currently leading. This, like the other book, was packed with useful ideas, questions, activities, suggestions, handouts, and more. It's a great resource for a school or mental health professional to have on the shelf and refer to or make copies from to talk through with teens. Again, this is a book best used in a setting where these can be talked through, as opposed to just filled out personally. It covers a pretty broad range of topics but is very straightforward. I found myself picking and choosing different exercises to meet the needs of my certain group members. There could be more mention about the internet-side of social networking, because more and more teens are wrapped up in that. But there's room for that in discussion.
Overall, I think it's a great resource!

He enjoyed the book and agreed to doing others by same ...

I purchased this book for my son, 15 to work independently on this summer. The chapters/lessons were short and direct so he had no problems completing them. He struggles with writing expressive thoughts and feelings so we would also work through the Chapters to allow him to discuss orally his feelings. He enjoyed the book and agreed to doing others by same authors. We will work on Bullying next. Although the content was age appropriate I wish they would give more lessons to express himself such as matching, or fill in blanks, etc.

An Excellent Resource!

An excellent resource. Many of the Social Skills books I owned were old and outdated. I needed something that would relate to my students and this generation. The Social Success Workbook is an excellent resource. The lessons and activities are relevant for todays teens.
