I bought Green Architecture Now! Vol. 2 for my roommate, who is majoring in Environmental Design. The pictures are absolutely beautiful, the chosen buildings are diverse and incredible, and floor plans are provided. Descriptions are very succinct (partly due to the fact that they are given in English, French, and German), so if you are looking for something extremely wordy, this is not the book for you. This book makes me want to be an architect! The buildings are so extravagant that I felt guilty about them, until the fact kicked in that they are made from sustainable materials and many are buildings that support environmental preservation in a variety of ways.

Long story short, if you like to feel hopeful for the future, imagine having unlimited funds for building your dream house, interested in architecture in general or sustainable building, this is the book for you! (and the Amazon price is a fantastic deal)

About the Author
Irving Chernev was born on January 29, 1900 in Pryluky in the Ukraine. He emigrated to the United States in 1920. He wrote some of the most successful and widely read chess books ever written. He was a lively and entertaining writer. On a percentage basis compared with the number of books he wrote, he is probably the most popular writer ever on the game of chess in history. His books are not read for the deep analysis but rather for the unusual games and chess positions, the curious facts and the amusing stories which have become part of chess lore that every chess player in the world now knows even those who have not read his books. He wrote that he "probably read more about chess, and played over more games than any man in history." He wrote 20 chess books, among them: Chessboard Magic!; The Bright Side of Chess; The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played; 1000 Best Short Games of Chess; Practical Chess Endings; Combinations: The Heart of Chess; and Capablanca's Best Chess Endings. In 1945, he and Kenneth Harkness wrote An Invitation to Chess. Perhaps his most famous book is Logical Chess: Move by Move. He died in San Francisco, California on September 29, 1981.

These are more modern than wordings like the King James or ESV: it is the Good News Translation and a French close-equivalent - if this publisher ever produced a bilingual KJV / Louis Segond in this quality publication I would immediately obtain multiple copies!

About the Author
Barbara A. Bardes is professor emerita of political science at the University of Cincinnati. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Kent State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. She served as a faculty member in political science and dean of Mundelein College at Loyola University of Chicago. In 1993, she was appointed dean of Raymond Walters College of the University of Cincinnati, where she served until 2003. She returned to the political science department where she held the position of graduate director before retiring. Bardes has written articles on public and foreign policy, and women and politics. She also has co-authored Declarations of Independence: Women and Political Power in 19th Century American Novels; Thinking About Public Policy; Public Opinion: Measuring the American Mind; and American Government and Politics Today.

Mack C. Shelley, II is a professor of political science and statistics at Iowa State University. After receiving his bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, DC, he went on to graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received a master's degree in economics and a Ph.D. in political science. He arrived at Iowa State in 1979. From 1993 to 2002, he served as elected co-editor of the Policy Studies Journal. Swanson); and Quality Research in Literacy and Science Education: International Perspectives and Gold Standards (with Larry Yore and Brian Hand).

Steffen W. Schmidt is a professor of political science at Iowa State University. He grew up in Colombia, South America, and has studied in Colombia, Switzerland, and France. He has a B.A. from Rollins College and obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York, in public law and government. Dr. Schmidt has published 14 books and over 130 articles in scholarly journals and is the recipient of numerous prestigious teaching prizes, including the Amoco Award for Lifetime Career Achievement in Teaching and the Teacher of the Year award. He is a pioneer in the use of web-based and real-time video courses and is a member of the American Political Science Association's section on Computers and Multimedia. He is known as "Dr. Politics" for his extensive commentary on U.S. politics in U.S. and international media. He is a weekly blogger for Gannett, and comments on CNN en Espanol and Univision, as well as WNYC, New York. Dr. Schmidt is on Facebook (Steffen W Schmidt) and Twitter (DrPolitics).

This book reflects two major premises. One is that we face a major crisis because of the way humans have been using the world's resources in a way that is totally unsustainable. The second is that although this is a major problem, there is hope, and much of that hope centres on chemistry. This is an important message. Of course chemistry is neutral, and sometimes its applications have caused damage to people and places. Yet its successes often go unnoticed, and the prospects for future prosperity are dismal without it.

Emsley's book is divided into chapters according to major areas of application of chemical sciences: food, water, health, fuels, plastics, cities and sport. Within each of these contexts, a case is made for how chemistry can make a continuing major contribution to maintaining and developing standards of living for present and future generations. Emsley discusses what has already been achieved, what is under development, and what chemists can reasonably hope to aspire to. However, he points out how such aspirations depend upon a continuing flow of gifted young people into the chemical sciences.

A key theme in the book is that despite the bad press often given to 'chemicals', especially those judged not to be 'natural', chemists have already done a great deal to help people become healthier and safer, as well as having increasingly sophisticated 'kit' to house and clothe, and increasingly entertain, us.

The volume is packed with facts, and although the themes will be familiar to chemists, Emsley is relentless in supporting his argument with engaging and relevant examples: including some rather obscure and bizarre ones. It is a rare reader who will not learn something from this book. However, the writing style is designed to make the book accessible well beyond the already-converted. This book is highly recommended for chemists who will enjoy its breadth. However, it would make an even better present for those misguided enough to see chemistry as inherently a 'bad guy' in the environmental context; and perhaps even more importantly, for those still young enough to be making up their minds.�
