A reliable and beautiful translation of Manto

There is no need to talk much about Manto himself. Many enthusiastic review of his writing can be found around the web. But the popular as he is, nevertheless only the limited number of his stories is available in English. Some translators have put effort and tried to open Manto to western public, but, alas, too often with unreliable (although at the moment ingenious) translations. Aatish Taseer has done a great job. And not an easy one indeed. By selecting mostly the stories that are not so often, if ever, translated, he provides us with the insight in some less known aspects of Manto's writing. And what is more important, Aatish Taseer translates faithfully, giving us correct and readable English translation, but with a great respect for the author himself. From the translation we can sense Manto's wit, humor and at the moment laconic mode of expression. So far, this is the most accurate collection of Manto's stories in English.
The collection comprises ten stories, out of which, only two or three are translated more often and maybe already familiar to the general reader. Besides these stories there is also very informative introduction about personal reasons of the translator to master Urdu, but also with some very clever insight in the role of Urdu in today's India. This introduction deserves the attention of the reader in the same way as the translated stories themselves.
To sum up - this translation is recommendable to all the fans of Manto's writing and the lovers of the short story itself. To the students of Urdu, it will be very useful to see how close the good translation could be to the original, without sacrificing to much of the poetic of the author and the readability in the target language.

disappointing

this was my first manto book, and while i did read it through, i guess it was the brand that carried me through in the hope of finding something extraordinary. didn't find it though.

manto's stories portray both the colorful, vibrant and culturally diverse parts of the Indian subcontinent and the darker, mysterious and grim realities of it. he's truly a gem.
